If you camera was on a tripod and not panning, you can duplicate the video on another track, then mask that area where the smudge is and use your pan/crop to nudge it to the right or left leaving the good sky area. I had to do this once myself.

    Thanks for the help.

I had the camera on a tri-pod but unfortunately there are many times that people faces come into the dark spots. However, there are also parts where the dark spots are only on areas that could be easily fixed and I would like at least to remove those ones.

Roger, I tried masking exactly the way you suggested but it doesn’t really work as I expected. Working a lot with Photoshop, I assumed feather would help me so the “masked” area would easily cover the dark spot. However, the more feather I add, it adds something like a glow? (shown on the picture below) I though it would just make the edges with lower opacity so it can fit nicely to the below layer. Any tips here?

    Thanks.

    I’m sorry. I wasn’t clear.
    1. place your event on the timeline.
    2. duplicate that same event on a timeline right above it.
    3. Mask the top event in a small area right next to the blur and soften it.
    4. And here is what I missed. Stay on your top event and go to your “track motion” at your track level, not the event level. (The icon with the white square with the arrow and blue box next to it)and slide it to the right or left a bit until it covers your blurred area.

Working up Roger’s suggestion, if you fancy this?

Then I have a VP12 VEG that I did it in ready for you 😉

I also couldn’t resist doing the following thru’ NB ColorFast too:

    Hey Roger,

Seems like it’s going to be more complicated that I though. Just to make sure I am doing everything correctly, what exactly do you mean when you say on #3 to soften it? How to do that? Feather is not really helping. And, why do I really need the track motion to cover the black spot? I just use the “position” (above the mask option) of the event and I cover the area I want. Is track motion supposed to do something more?

    Hey Graham,

Yeah, that’s exactly how I want to fix it but I don’t really understand what you mean with the “VP12 VEG” that you have ready for me.

Sorry, it seems like I lack a lot of Vegas knowledge. Thanks for your patience and your help.

Do you have version 12 of Vegas. It was a new feature in 12.
You really don’t have to soften it though although it might help.

Using track motion will take that video event so you can nudge it left or right. Of course since you masked it, only the mask will show up.

So… mask a small clean area just to the left or right of your bad spot. That masked area is the area that will get nudged over and cover your smudge when using the track motion.

    Sorry for the late reply,

I have Sony Vegas pro 11.

Vegas 11 does not have that feature to soften edges on a mask. That’s new to Vegas 12. However, you should still be able to make the mask without any softening and it should still work fine.
