  • Auto Ripple not affecting all events in my timeline

Hi guys — I’m new here, but I’ve been lurking forever. I guess I’m somewhere in the lower-intermediate levels of Sony Vegas users, and sometimes I run across stuff that makes me feel like I have a long way to go, yet. 😉

I’m using Sony Vegas Pro 12, and I have numerous events in my timeline across many tracks. I want to inset an event into a spot early in the timeline, and I simply want everything to move over to make room for that event. I have Auto Ripple selected, and MOST of the other events are moving just as they should. However there are a number of events that are not moving, and doing it manually will be a lengthy process and a giant hassle. Is there an easy way of selecting all the events in my timeline, so that Vegas will “know” to move everything when Auto Ripple is selected? Something like that?

There seems to be no common denominator between the events that are not moving — some are sound files, some are video, some are generated media. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to re-install Vegas or something? I’ve never run across this problem before, and I’m a bit baffled.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for being such a great community!

If Vegas is leaving out some events then all you have to do is select the first event on the other track(s) that you want moved and by moving that event along with the original event, all of the events on the track will ripple. So you don’t need to select them all, just the first event on each track you want to ripple.

You can also purchase a plug-in like VASST Event Tool which has a selection tool that will easily help you make selections before after, above, below, the selected event on the timeline with a single click.

You may have Ignore Event Grouping (Ctrl+Shift+U) enabled. This will cause groups that would normally move together to be ignored. Try toggling it and see if it helps.

Thanks so much! Didn’t have Ignore Event Grouping enabled, so I’m still a little confused by how this came about, but knowing that I can just select the first event in a given track will help me immensely! Also, I probably should have figured that one out on my own. 😉

I’ll definitely look into the VASST Event Tool, also — sounds pretty great.

    Thanks again!

Eric – you will notice a small downward pointing arrow to the right of your ‘Auto ripple’ toggle button. It gives you three options; ‘all tracks’, ‘affected tracks only’ (ie the tracks on which the event you have highlighted is), or ‘affected tracks with markers etc.’
Combined with the Event Grouping toggle button John mentioned, this could be causing the issue that you are seeing.
    Cheers.

Oh yea, I just assumed that he knew that there were three different ripple options but you’re right, that could be the problem right there. Make sure that All Tracks, Markers, and Regions is selected.

BINGO! That’s precisely what it was. 100% solved! I have no idea how I managed to select “affected tracks only” without trying, but that is exactly what I did. Thanks a bunch!
