Rendering with any video compressors leaves only sound
just like as it says in the title, whenever I use ANY compressor it always ends up the same seemingly no matter the import/export type.
it’ll look just fine in the video preview as it renders but once it’s done and I look at the video it has the background of a sound only type file.
can anyone help with this?

i use the HDV 720-25p intermediate template, I’ve used different video formats for decompression though. only uncompressed works

I’m not familiar witha template by that name. Can you be a bit more specific. Am I correct that because you said it’s HDV that you are using MainConcept MPEG-2 as the render type? Are you then selecting the HDV 720-20p template? Why did you refer to it as “intermediary”?
Also I’m not even sure I understand your question now that I re-read it:

Are you taking about audio compression or video compression?

What is the “background of a sound only type file”. Do you mean that the media player you are using is only playing the sound and not the video?

I just click “render as” and it’s what comes up in the drop menu under template, directly quoted.

video compression, im not to worried about audio compression

my computer uses album photos for music if no video is present. if there is no album cover in the file it displays a certain background.
there have been cases where it didn’t format right and just came out black screen, but in my issue right now it’s that i’m getting the background of a file without any video code. -

The templates are categorized into types like MainConcept AVC, MainConcept MPEG-2, Sony AVC, etc. Do you know what type you are using? Feel free to post screen shots if you don’t know.
Also what version of Vegas are you using? Movie Studio? Vegas Pro? what number? (12.0?)

Which Save As Type did you select?I just checked a clean install of Vegas Pro 8.0 and there are no HDV templates with the word “intermediate” in them so it did not come from Sony. I’m guessing that you have a bad template.

ah, thanks for that picture. I’m using video for windows .avi
and another thing, I’m almost certain I haven’t added anything to the program. I don’t even know how. -

OK now we’re getting somewhere. No you did not add that. When you couldn’t tell me what rendering type you had selected and you said HDV I assumed you were using MPEG-2 which is the HDV format. I forgot that way, way back in the days of Vegas Pro 8.0 (we’re up to 12.0 now you know) Sony use to ship CineForm which is an AVI codec that created intermediaries for HDV editing purposes only. If you drop the AVI file back into Vegas Pro 8.0 you will see that it plays fine but Windows Media Player will not know how to play it unless you purchase a CineForm license to use it outside of Vegas Pro which is why you are getting audio only and no video in your media player.
Do not select any of the “intermediate” templates if you want to play the file in Windows Media Player and you should be fine.
The bigger question is: Why were you rendering the file? Was it as a final video for delivery? If so, what is your target device for playing it back? That will determine the proper rendering format. You can’t just pick one at random. You have to know what you are doing. With the knowledge of video you have shown, I’m guessing you should have purchased Movie Studio which would help you make these decisions rather than Vegas Pro which assumes you know a bit more about video editing.

I was rendering the video to pull all the editing together into one file for uploading (i’m a youtuber of sorts). I guess my target device would be flash player, or whatever the YouTube video files play of of.
Sony Vegas suites me just fine, i’ve seen both and personally I think Vegas is the better option for what i need.
