  • Problem rendering with Sony Vegas

Posted by Mike Ryder on May 4, 2013 at 11:12 am

When I try and render in Sony Vegas Pro 9, I keep getting an error message “system is low on memory. Try closing open applications” or something similar to that.

I closed all open programs, and in task manager closed down any applications I didn’t need (google search box, a few things like that) but still I get the same message.

I’m trying to render in the lowest 720p setting (4.8 Mbps I think), and I’ve got a 4 GB RAM (2x the recommended for vegas 9, 4x the minimum). My video is 4 mins 30 long. I’ve been able to render in up to 1080p in the past, but for some reason its not working now…

    Any advice?

Just to add, I generally get this message immediately when trying to render, or a few seconds into the render

    !Sigh!
It’s time for another referral to the explanation that you could have easily found by searching for “Low Memory”.

Thanks for the reply, I’ll give it a try.

I don’t really understand much tech stuff, so do I need to change it back afterwards, or is there any problems that could be caused by changing this?

most definitely some video effect or source material requiring more RAM than you have, might want to try bumping the page-file but it would cause hard-drive trashing and renders would complete very slowly… not recommended, just upgrade your PC specs, RAM is very cheap.

Possible an installed plugin triggering this problem.

None at all. Adding RAM is the best way to increase your memory available to commit, but the larger pagefile inly reserves more disk space for paging.

@Steve Rhoden I have no installed plugins, other than the default ones for Vegas 9.

@David Alfredo What do you mean by “hard drive trashing”?

I no expert at technical stuff, but I’m wondering if there’s any way to manually slow down the render, so it may be less intensive on RAM. Its just a theory, but does anyone know if this exists, and would it help?

This is really frustrating me now, I’ve been able to render up to 1080p before with no problems, and after 4 months of editing this video I can’t render it :(.

Just as some additional info, the video I’m trying to render has 2 video tracks (1 with video, the other is a watermark), and 1 audio track which has music.

“trashing” = fragmented data, you’d rather look into upgrading the RAM in your PC, should be cheap.

My PC only supports up to 4GB of RAM (which I already have) according to the crucial memory scan.

Would there be any advantage to me buying new RAM, when its the same amount as I already have?

    My PC is Advent PQD5002

    only 4 GB ? that would be some old / low-tier motherboard…

the reason behind needing at least 8 GB is for rendering medium-large projects, not 5 minutes clips. Even those need a lot of RAM when multiple plugins / video effects are in use… if Vegas can’t find the physical RAM it would use the hard drive for paging, making the software crawl. If you’re capped at 4 GB you should stick to 720p, low bitrate projects or very short ones.
