  • Capture video to non firewire laptop

I capture live events to my laptop via Vegas Capture. I run from my camera to the laptop using firewire. My laptop is getting old, but I discovered new laptops do not have firewire.

I know I can film to tape, but I still need firewire to get it into the laptop. Capturing directly to the laptop saves me a great deal of time.

Is there anyway to work around this issue. The school is not going to replace our camera anytime soon. It is a pretty nice JVC GY-DV500.

If you’ve got a PCMCIA slot, have you thought of one of these?

Back, about 10 years back this worked to my Dell Schlaptop.

Macbooks still have firewire, and you can dual boot to have Windows for Vegas. You may check Alienware and Lenovo for their upper end stuff that may still have firewire and/or an Express Card slot.
    PCMCIA is pretty much dead….
I also have purchased numerous older Dells that have both PCMCIA and firewire to have when I need to use firewire. I used to have 4 Sony FX1’s for multicam shoots and each would have a laptop for backup.

I have switched to cameras with chips now and am VERY happy I did. However I still need firewire for my audio interfaces when recording audio. Thank God they still have firewire on upper end motherboards!!

    Good luck

The HP Elitebook portable workstations all have a built in FireWire port along with E-Sata, usb3, and Express Card slots.

But your solution is to keep the old laptop to capture the Firewire data.

I purchased a brand new laptop less than 2 years ago and it had the express card slot. I just recently purchased a firewire capture card (Newegg.com) to use on that laptop and it worked fine.

    Thanks

I bought an elitebook with win7 pro recently from tiger direct. As Stephen said it has every kind of port including firewire. I’m very happy with it. Not the most beautiful screen though but it’s ok.
