First thing to do is check your input settings (footage interpretation). If your footage is interlaced, make sure you’re not throwing away a field.
Then, do a test a full res, no compression, or something lossless like Quicktime PNG (set to “best”) to make sure it’s not just your compressor causing the problem.

Hard to say, it is. (in my best Yoda voice)
    Can you post a sample?

Try using a different font to rule-out font issues. Also, make sure that you’re turning on the collapse transformations button for your text layer (the little sunshine). This will make sure that the text is continually rasterized if you scale it over 100%.

Hmmm. I’m afraid I’m at a loss there. I don’t work in or with avi usually. (I’m mac/quicktime based). Are you working on a PC?

Try another codec. Try quicktime, and/or an image sequence. Still getting the problem?: It’s not your codec.

Could it be as simple as that he has motion blur checked on for some of his layers?

He says it only appears blurred during the render. My guess would be that the master motion blur switch is disabled when he does a ram preview, but it is checked on in his render settings.

Could it be the resolution settings in the render module?

i know it’s a year after you posted this– but i just encountered the same problem and fixed it by trashing my prefs (after backing them up, of course)

    navigate to

    User Account> Library> Preferences> Adobe> After Effects

just option+drag it to your backup location, then drag it to your trash bin. restart after effects, and enjoy a blur-free render (i hope).
