I’ve been trying to edit bits of videos into clips for a montage, but in Vegas the preview is appearing very choppy, and after rendering this choppiness is still there, or the entire clip is one frame.

What’s going on, and how can I fix it?

What is the original video format?

    What are your project properties?

    What format are rending to?

    How powerful is your PC?

The original video is a .mp4

    .mp4

2.1 GHz quad core AMD A6-3600

I’ve never had any problems with Vegas before
Disabling resampling solves the choppiness in the preview but not after rendering

So… are you saying that these particular files have worked before, or you haven’t had problems with other files? I ask because MP4 is a pretty broad specification and there are lots of MP4 files that don’t edit easily depending on where they come from. Where did you get these files?

I see that you project is 29.97fps. Are the MP4 files 29.97fps?

The files I am editing were rendered in Vegas using the Internet HD 1080p template under MainConcept AVC/AAC

The original files are 25.0 fps, I assume i should be using the same?

Yes, now you’re getting it. Your problem is that you project is set up incorrectly for the media you are using. You should use the HD 1080-50i (1920×1080, 25.000 fps) project template instead. This should fix your playback problem and you won’t have to disable resample anymore.

While rendering, the preview freezes on a single frame, which ends up being all that was rendered, even after turning on resampling and matching the fps

Is there anything special going on where it stops? If you switch the events around on the timeline does it stop in a different place? In other words, is it stopping at one particular event regardless of where it is on the timeline or is it stopping at the same place on the timeline regardless of the event?

This could be a rendering bug. I’ve had it happen to me with H.264 MOV files. Try different media that is not MP4 to make sure it’s the media and not something with your computer. You may have to render in sections to different format to get around this.

When I split the clip i want from both sides and delete the rest, a frame from around 1/3 into the clip becomes the first frame, which is the frame that it freezes on.
    Pretty weird.
It is stopping on the same event regardless of position on the timeline.

I have rendered clips from a few .avi files and they have worked perfectly normally.

Could you please install MediaInfo program and show its outputs for your source footage and for resulting video.

Also, show your project’s settings if you change it.

Sounds like a bug in Vegas and nothing that you are doing.

That proves that it’s something about the media.

Yup, I would convert the file you’re having problems with to AVI. That should work around the problem for now.
