I downloaded the 10-day trial version of Izotope RX2.

Question I have is I opened an audio file with a pretty bad hum from a running commercial size refrigerator running in the background.

I was lucky because there were a few seconds of nothing but the hum at the start of the audio file.

I used the Reduce Hum option, using the Learn button and was able to pretty much eliminate the hum at the beginning.

Now, how do I replicate that throughout the entire audio file so that the hum is eliminated?

What I did was create a preset, then applied that preset to the entire file. The hum somewhat went away, but the person talking with pretty much inaudible after that.

What’s the best way to “learn” a noise, such as a hum, at the beginning of a file, then apply the reduction to the entire audio file?

    Thanks.

Once the “learn” is complete and you are ready to process the entire file, drag the selection boundary to the beginning and end of the file. With the entire file selected, click on the process button.

It’s best to use RX as a standalone. That way you have all the tools handy for different repairs.
You don’t need to sample the noise at the beginning of the audio. Sample it where it best shows up as an independent sound with nothing else going on, then hit preview, it will begin the preview a few frames back. You can also highlight a larger area once you’ve sampled and it will preview that entire area you’ve highlighted. That way you can better tell if what you corrected will work throughout the audio.
Hit Ctrl/A to hightlight the entire audio and hit process and it will correct the entire thing.
If you don’t get all the noise out on the first sample after you’ve processed it, sample it again and do another process pass.
