Current Time Indicator cannot display footage smothly
Hi All,
I’m facing a strange problem in AE CS3. When I move (or drag) my
CTI in the time line to play footage, instead of displaying a smooth video in the comp, it shows only the last frame where the CTI points at when I stop.The RAM preview still works well so I think it’s not because of the hardware. After rebooting several times, the problem is still there.
Any help could be appreciated =)

Is Live Update turned off, perhaps?

I notice that lots of users prefer to have Live Update switched on.
I prefer to have it switched off. And ALL my students understand why.
When Live Update is switched off, you can still activate it by depressing the Alt/Option key as you drag the Timeline Indicator. THe benefit of having Live Update switched off is that it prevents AE from unnecessarily rendering frames that you don’t really need to view in the Comp Panel. More often than not, when moving the Timeline Indicator, what you’re trying to do is to view a specific frame. As such, you don’t really want AE to be rendering the intermediate frames. When working with a computationally intensive composition, you really do not want AE to render intermediate frames.
So, again, the best way, IMO, to work with Live Update is to switch it off. To initiate Live Update on a as-and-when-needed basis (interactively), simply drag the Timeline Indicator while depressing the Alt/Option key.
You’ll get a more responsive workflow and yet leverage on Live Update when you want it.
