I have Movie Studio 12 Platinum (MS12) (latest build 756).

I downloaded the trail of Vegas Pro (VP12)(latest build 486) and loaded my MS12 project into that. VP12 is a steaming pile of you know what compared to MS12. Interesting since they should be the same code base. Something must be amiss with the VP12 setup.

My Project is 1440×1080 with 12MP stills (4000×3000). About 350 stills. All but time lapse, has zoom/pan/crop/rotate.

Yes, I know the stills are oversize. But I did not care. MS12 was smooth as silk.

VP12 is horribly slow compared to MS12 on this project. Horribly.

Video preview quality is HORRIBLE compared to MS12. You need best in VP12 to come close to MS12 preview level quality. I cant describe how bad VP12 looks in comparison to MS12. Especially when pan/zoom is going.

VP12 cannot preview smoothly. Not even close. MS12 is smooth as silk. My preview is normally auto which normally results in quarter res.

MS12 works with CPU only setting very smoothly, with some occasional stutter on fast zooms. With GPU everything smooth as silk even at set at half quality except on fast zooms at half quality.

VP12 crashes with GPU while edit/preview, unlike MS12.
Note: MS12 will crash on a render with GPU on this project. Editing has been 100% stable.
GPU does not help VP12 become smooth in preview or give better preview quality.

    My machine.
    Window 7 64-bit. Core i7 860 (2.9GHz) quad core, hyperthread.
8GB ram. ATI/AMD 5850 video card with 1GB ram, latest driver.

I did a quick check of a 1080p30 video project and things look similar between the two.

Something is massively different with the MS12 and VP12 interpolation and rotate functions. MS12 rocks. VP12 is worthless.

    Ideas anyone?

…depressed. thought VP12 would be an “upgrade”, not a downgrade.

    After some more looking.

MS12 preview is better across the board in quality until you get to best then they are the similar. This is also true on 1080p30 type video. Just much less so than hires stills.

MS12 there is little diff from Draft to Good. All are quite good and visually similar. It appears MS12 might be taking advantage of the video scaling hardware that has been in cards since the 90’s.

VP12 seems to do all the work on its own, no hardware offload, and thus has issue with the hires files, and the huge difference in visual quality from preview, to good to best.

The visual quality diffs (prev, good, best) in VP12 are just different algorithms as expected. The hardware scaling is always the same algorithm, typically bilinear.

Still curious, and disappointing, that MS12 has much better playback quality and smoothness than VP12. Might have something to do with the split and multi-cam capabilities in VP12.
