Spinning Question
Posted by Joao Souza on February 26, 2013 at 4:19 amI hope spinning is the right term 😉
Imagine you have a planet and you want it to keep spinning on its axe, how to do that?
Do I have to use track motion and keep creating spinning points or is there an easier/faster way to do that like a spinning loop or something as an example?
Thanks. We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

Yes, you would use 3D Track Motion and two keyframes. That’s pretty easy. The maximum number of rotations allowed is 10 so if you need more than that, you could create a nested project and have the event that creates loop on the timeline by dragging it out for as long as you need it (assuming that the media is static or can be looped).

February 26, 2013 at 1:00 pmOk but how I set those 10 rotations?
I make two keyframes then what?
On track motion I found snap settings/rotation = up to 45 so I guess that’s not what I need.
Rotation gives me only angle/x offset/y offset/z offset but nothing about 10 rotations. We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

February 26, 2013 at 11:01 pmI’m assuming this is a 2d object and you want to spin it along the z axis? I’d use pan crop and just drag it around as many times as you want… not sure what John is referring to under track motion, but I tried it and could clock many more than 10 revolutions in pan crop.

February 26, 2013 at 11:48 pmNope, like the example I gave, imagine a planet which I want to keep rotating on its axe.
Maybe clock hands that keep rotating and never stop.
How to keep any object rotating endlessly or at least set how many rotations I want?We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

February 27, 2013 at 1:01 amNot sure how you can simply “turn on” rotation… doesn’t work that way. You could create an event with your image that you want to rotate. Go into pan crop and create a keyframe at the far right end of the clip, rotate that image 360 degrees. then render just that event to the timeline. Then you can drag the event for as long as you want and it will just keep spinning… you might have to experiment with rotation – depending on the speed of rotation, maybe just rotate 359 degrees so that first bit does not stutter.
Now if you need your object to have a transparent background then you’re talking about rendering with alpha channel or use chromokey to drop out background.

He wants to rotate in 3D. Pan/Crop is 2D. You need to enable 3D Track Motion to get it to spin in 3D on the Y axis.
[Joao Souza] “Ok but how I set those 10 rotations?”
Place the track in 3D mode (3D Source Alpha). On your first keyframe set the Y Rotation to -1800 (that’s the max). On the last keyframe set the Y Rotation to +1800 (that’s the max) and if you add them together, 1800 + 1800 = 3600 / 360 degrees per rotation = 10 rotations max.

February 27, 2013 at 2:34 pmOh man that’s so obvious but the way you talked about 10 rotations I thought there was a button for it LOL
I don’t want to rotate in 3D, I want to rotate in any D, I just wanted to know if there’s a way to make something keep rotating endlessly, if a video has 1 minute or 1 hour, I wand a planet(as an example) that keeps rotating the whole video.
As rotation speed follows the distance between keyframes I guess in an one hour video rotation would be almost like nothing so I guess I’d have to make small clips with the rotation speed I wand then place them together or even render then again to have only one clip with the speed I want.We have so much time and so little to do! / Willy Wonka

I gave you that answer in my first post. Have it rotate once in it’s own project, drop that project into your “real” project and loop it as many times as you need by extending the event.

February 27, 2013 at 2:44 pmYep but that “number of rotations button” took my attention off of your answer.

February 27, 2013 at 2:52 pmYea, sorry about that. I had a busy day yesterday so I made that post before work in the morning but didn’t get to check back until after work in the evening. Otherwise I would have explained it sooner.
