Sony vegas blue, green, yellow corruption on video files
My videos are working fine, then after some time they go black on the timeline and spaz out in the preview window. They start working and stop working randomly again as well, so I can’t render any videos because some clips work, but some don’t.

Im using .avi video files when it does this.

What codec do these AVI files use? I’m guessing it’s DivX or XviD or some other hacked H.264 codec that will never work properly in an AVI container.

I don’t know. I have xvid and some other codecs, but I don’t know what it is using. What should I do? It just started doing this recently, didn’t have problems before.

I don’t know why you didn’t have problems before but Vegas has never supported Xvid so I would stop using it. One option is to convert the files to Motion JPEG using a free tool like AviDemux 2.5. Like this:

Would it be possible to just download a new codec to read the files? Or just set it to use another codec? I used to have K-Lite codec or something similar i think
EDIT: Tried to uninstall xvid to allow another codec to do it or something, but then I couldn’t import it. Even when re-installing the codec I can’t import the clips now. Is there something I can do?
Im trying the program you mentioned, but it won’t let me import the .avi’s either or they turn out green screens.
EDIT 2: But I can still view the videos in windows live movie maker and windows move player classic.

A CODEC pack such as K-lite is probably the worst possible thing you can install with Vegas.
Is there any chance you can get the video files recaptured?
Being able to view the files successfully is not an indication of their suitability for editing.

You could try and use Movie Maker to convert it to a WMV file, then load it into Vegas…you will lose quality but this is the only workaround I know if no other converter will work.

No. The codec that the file uses cannot be changed without re-rendering the entire file using a different codec. As Nigel said, you never want to install a codec-pak like K-Lite because it will mess up Vegas. What you want to do is convert the file and never use codec-paks.

Yea, that’s because H.264 should not be used in an AVI file and it’s unfortunate that DivX and Xvid hacked this together because it doesn’t always work as you have seen.
Try using Handbreak to convert the file into an MP4 file. See if it can read the file and convert it.

Just for future reference, you never want to convert files to WMV for use with Vegas. Vegas does not edit WMV files easily and, in fact, it can’t edit the audio in them at all so it has to build proxy files which sometimes cause problems. WMV is fine for Windows Movie Maker but it should never be used with Vegas except just as a final render format if needed.

I got it to work with freemake converter to .wmv then imported to vegas,specifiying the replacement files.
