  • Nero Express making a video DVD: Error the following files may not reside in the VIDEO_TS directory

Posted by Dieter Moreno on January 11, 2013 at 12:37 am

I am having a problem with Nero Express making a video DVD (video DVD as in plays a movie on a stand alone DVD player connected to a TV instead of on my PC).

    The symptoms are:

    (1) I clicked on “Video DVD”

    (2) I clicked on “Disc Info” to select a drive to burn to. I selected my DVD drive of course. Of course it can burn DVDs, it has burnt data DVDs before.

    (3) I inserted a blank DVD-RW. The blank DVD-RW appeared on the Disc Info ui and showed that the disc was empty.

    (4) I exited the “Disc Info” screen.

    (5) I clicked on “Add”.

    (6) I selected a .vob file (isn’t that what DVD videos use???).

    (7)This error message occurs:

“One or more files could not be added to a compilation.

The following files may not reside in the VIDEO_TS directory of a DVD-Video compilation. Only compliant DVD-Video files
    VIDEO_TS.IFO,
    VIDEO_TS.VOB,
    VIDEO_TS.BUP,
    VTS_nn_0.IFO,
    VTS_nn_0.VOB,
    VTS_nn_0.BUP and
    VTS_nn_m.VOB
can be added to the VIDEO_TS folder. Please add files from a completed DVD-Video title or use an authoring software like Nero Vision to create DVD-Video files from standard video files such as *.avi and *.mpg.”

Is “use an authoring software like Nero Vision to create DVD-Video files from standard video files such as *.avi and *.mpg.” what I am supposed to do?

What if I don’t want to pay for it?

I converted Matroska videos and Mp4 videos to file extension *.vob using a freeware converter that I already have that can convert to .vob called “Tippard Total Media Converter”.

Why does Nero not understand .vob unless it is in these special file extensions that are modifications of .vob?

Do you know of anything that works to make the videos into these special file extensions that is free?

I already own Vegas Pro 10. Does Vegas Pro 10 have the capability to convert a PC video like *.mpg into a DVD video folder containing the correct file extensions to be ready to burn with Nero?

Drop your video into Vegas Pro 10.0 and use Tools | Burn Disc | DVD… and forget about Nero.

Oh thanks. I just figured out that Vegas had a DVD burning feature and I was reading the threads that say that Nero is useless.

Now I think I get what the threads were saying when they were saying that Nero is useless.

Nero use to be a great tool for burning media. Then they lost their way and tried to do too much to the point where their invasive installation tactics caused other programs to stop working. Now I consider Nero on par with malware and would never install it on any of my video editing workstations.

I don’t use Nero so I can’t say. I use DVD Architect from Sony to author DVD’s.

The VIDEO_TS folder requires very specific files that are formatted for DVD. DVD Architect will build these files for you from your rendered MPEG2 file from Vegas. You don’t have to know anything about this process. You just drop your video file into DVD Architect and tell it to burn the DVD for you.
