Note: I’ve been a dedicated Vegas user for a few years, so I figured this would post this here, but I’m not sure this is the best place to. If anyone has a suggestion of a better place to ask this, please let me know.

I do documentary-style videos of trains and railroads, and right now I am working on publishing some of my work for sale. I would like to try something unique with my first DVD, and make animated maps. What I want to do is show a map, and then “draw” the route of the railroad I am filming, from point a to b. Problem here is I have no idea how to even begin trying to do that. Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

See if Route Generator will do what you want.

This is exactly what I am looking for. Can’t thank you enough! I don’t think I ever would have found that on my own.

    Thanks!

Thanks but the real thanks goes to Stephen Mann for recommending it a long time ago.
Glad to hear that it helped.

I’m going to have to try that route generator software. But the way I’ve always done it is to create two maps, one with and one without the route drawn. Then place the two maps one above the other on the timeline. Use the mask tool to reveal the route with keyframes to suite the speed you need. You can use this method to show a vehicle (a third event above the two maps). You can also show just a trail behind the vehicle by using a feathered mask of a set size and move it along the path instead of revealing the entire map behind you.

What I think I am going to is use a combination of the two. Use the animation, pause it when I need to, then mask in titles and details and whatnot.
