Audio Interface Recommendations for Sony Vegas Pro 12, Acid Pro 7, Sound Forge Pro 10
I have searched on this forum and found that PreSonus firewire solutions were/are good choices to work with the Sony software I own. My main video editing system has firewire, but is a tall tower case, so it is not going to leave the room it is in. My thought was to get something I could use on that desktop and when my kids want to try recording in the music room upstairs, I could attach this audio interface on their Windows 7 laptop (Intel i7), but only has USB not firewire ports (no pc card slot either to add firewire). We have a MIDI keyboard, drum pads, and guitars. I don’t envision recording more than 4 tracks at a time with this setup, so would the CPU hit of going with a PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL or 44VSL with an i7 laptop be acceptable or is there a way I could use the firewire model (PreSonus FireStudio Mobile) without buying a new laptop?

Firewire really shines when you’re recording 8 simultaneous tracks but for just a couple of track the PreSonus AudioBox via USB should be fine. I have an M-Audio Firewire 410 on my Windows workstation and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB on my MacBook Pro and it works fine. I never record more than one track at a time (it’s just me recording).

Thanks for the response. I’ll go with the USB model for now and follow your other advice you given people where I will set the onboard audio as the default and try to keep the PreSonus available just to the Sony apps.

I have two 5-year old Sony Vaio laptops with Firewire and use one of the laptops with Vegas 9 and a Presonus Firepod. I recently bought another Firepod on eBay which would give me 16-channels of record capability. (I have an orchestra record coming up).

Yea, I find that keeping your OS audio separate helps a lot because of the sample rate differences.
