Render advice please
Still getting to grips with everything but am still unsure about what format I should be rendering to.
Basically, I have 1080p 50 video with 5.1 sound.
I want to retain the highest video quality and keep 5.1.
The resulting files will need to be shared between family. It’s not for web.
I have tried Sony AvCHD and that works fine with the 5.1 but I couldn’t choose 50fps so the video quality isn’t so good. I then tried MainConcept (mp4) at 50fps and the video was better, but it doesn’t seem to allow for 5.1
Ideally I want to burn the resulting files to DVD for playback in a Blu Ray player. I know this works for the AVCHD files, but how about the MainConcept (mp4) files?
Any pointers or advice would be appreciated. I wanted to get my first proper project sorted so I can give copies to family at Xmas.

Then you don’t want to include the audio in the render. You want to render the video at 50p using MainConcept AVC and the audio as Dolby Digital AC-3. Give both files the same name and DVD Architect will understand that they are separate video and audio streams that can be written to the Blu-ray disc.
Also, why would you want to write to DVD media for playback in a Blu-ray player? With Blu-ray Burners costing $89 and Blu-ray discs at $1 each there is no reason to use DVD’s which are not guaranteed to work because they are not part of the Blu-ray spec so players do not have to support this.

I appreciate a blu ray burner would be the best solution, but is there any way I can do the same but burn to DVD? I realise that not all blu ray players will play them, but they have been ok so far on the players I have tried.
When I get a bit of money will go down the blu ray route.

You can make a Blu-ray project and create an ISO file with DVD Architect and as long as you don’t go over the 4.7GB limit of a DVD you can burn the ISO to DVD media with a free program like ImgBurn or BurnAware and it should work.

Mmmmm. Ok, so render the video to a bluray format in vegas and render the 5.1 audio separately. Name the files the same and use DVDA to create a blu ray ISO, then burn the ISO to a DVDR and try that?
Like you say, keeping under the limits for the DVDR?
Sounds like a plan if that will work.
Will a blu ray player have the same chance of playing the above as an AVCHD DVDR?

I don’t know I use real Blu-ray discs. Why don’t you just render to AVCHD with 5.1 Surround and drop that into DVD Architect? That should work.

I did that, well I rendered as AVC and burnt the file directly to DVD. It works fine, along with the 5.1
But, I also did a test render to Mp4 (with stereo) and the video quality seems much better to my eyes.
I guess that’s the best option?
Coming from AVCHD format is my best bet for highest quality to get a bluray burner?

The key is to use the same bit rate. Several of the templates have different bit rates so if you used one with a lower bit rate it’s not going to look as good as the same format with a higher bit rate. You’ll need to do some experimenting.
