I have AE 5.5, 6.5, 7 and CS4 on my Macbook Pro. I’d like to install AE CS3 on it to do a C4D/AE demo, but Adobe won’t let me. Here’s the message I get when I try to install from disk:

Adobe After Effects CS3 is already installed. To remove or modify this software, please use its original installer.

Install was from original disk, as was AE7 and CS5. And no, I can’t find an install of CS3 on the computer. However, I do have Bridge and Device Central CS3 & 4 installed.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks, Dave — yep, I have CS3 & 4 coexisting on another machine, but I installed them as CS3 first, CS4 second. On the laptop, I skipped CS3 and went straight from 7 to CS4.

Maybe seeing CS4 makes it think I have CS3.

Steve, I’d sure like to hear Todd weigh in on this but there was an application Adobe distributed called Adobe Clean that removed hidden items that can prevent an installation. I’m pretty sure its still available on their website.

I’d be concerned that it might screw up your current installations. Todd??

Yes, installing After Effects CS4 _after_ After Effects CS3 is no problem.

Installing After Effects CS3 _after_ After Effects CS4 can cause problems.

I’m not immediately sure what to advise if you really need to install After Effects CS3 on a machine that already has After Effects CS4 on it.

If you ask this question on the Adobe user-to-user forum, then I can more easily direct the right people to help you (since we actually have some engineering folks on that forum).

    Hi Todd,

I was able to make do with AE 7 for the demo, though using it did elicit some snickers from the crowd. Good thing I didn’t launch 5.5.

If I really need to install CS3, I’ll take your advice and go to the Adobe user-to-user forum.

    Thanks,
    Steve
