Thanks to John Rofrano for QT Animation codec tip

I just wanted to make a public thanks to John for the tip on using this codec if you need a file with alpha channel capability that’s a LOT smaller than uncompressed AVI.
I use an animated liripipe for the opening of the graduation ceremonies for the college I work for.
Because it gets keyed over top of live video, I needed it with an alpha channel.
Uncompressed AVI was OK when I was doing SD video but not OK when I made the switch to HD.
I tried it in my Tricaster and it brought it to it’s knees 🙁
Then I remembered what you had said about this particular codec so I tried it and it worked like a charm 🙂
Being a LOT smaller in size was a real bonus!!

You’re welcome Mike. I’m glad that information came in handy. I use the QuickTime Animation codec all the time for pre-rendering complicated lower thirds and any overlay graphics that I do in BCC8. It’s really a great code to have in your kit.

I’ll jump in here as well.
Some months ago John pointed me to The QT animation codec for rendering beautiful crisp animations from Carrara, which I import and edit in Vegas.

Hey Guys

I was using ScreenFlow on Mac and I rendered a bunch of clips using Lossless (Apple animation). If I drag in a few clips it works fine but as soon as I drag in a substantial amount like about an hours worth or more…I start getting bugs like:

Red screen
Audio plays with no Waveform
Audio plays with no video
Media Offline
Crash / Hang
etc..

Outside of creating tons of short projects…anything I can do to avoid QT issues with these big files in vegas?

NOTE: these are big 2560×1440 recorded on iMac screen for Pan/Scan tutorials

Red screens are usually due to resource constraints. Make sure you have enough memory. Editing QuickTime on a PC is always going to be suboptimal because Vegas calls QuickTime to process the files rather than decoding them itself.

I use Camtasia to record screen captures on my Mac and the files edit very easily in Vegas Pro because the TechSmith codec is very efficient. If you do this a lot, you might want to look into Camtasia.

Thanks. I have tons of memory on the computer. Do you know if I can increase my memory limit or something?

I looked into this a little more and here is what I think is happening… QuickTime is 32-bit on Windows and is restricted to 2GB of memory regardless of how much physical memory there is on your computer so your options are to convert your video to a non-QuickTime format, or edit the video on the Mac you captured them on where QuickTime is 64-bit.
