  • Glitching video source problem (flickering)

Posted by Ged Jurga on October 14, 2012 at 8:26 pm

Hello there! It’s my first post in Creative Cow! I found it helpful through out the years bu I couldn’t find the solution or even some other topics of people having this kind of problem.

To start with, I’m doing game walkthroughs on my free-time.

I’m not sure why do I get a lot of this kind of problems recently (glitching video sources) but the ending part of the video (which is ment to be like a hub for a youtube users to choose next episode or previous by clicking on a thumbnails) is glitchy after the render.. The video source keeps glitching and swapping with the other one. I tried to render it with different formats and extensions (mp4, wmv) using Sony Avc or Windows media video v11 but i still get the same thing.
Also i was getting this problem before with variety of artifacts and unknown things appearing and flickering or changing color on my video.

Here’s my video I’m talking about. You can notice on the bottom left corner video source there is some kind of glitching appearing which shows one frame from another video source on the right. the same thing with the other one.

And here’s the screenshot of the project and the project settings. As you can see – nothing special.

Here’s another example just skip the video till 36:00 right to the end and you will see the same thing….

Is it something to do with my graphics card or particular codecs? I started to get this kind of problems after I reinstalled windows.
I get this kind of problems both in Sony Vegas 10 32 bit and Sony Vegas 11 64bit.

It’s quite annoying and I hope some experienced people will help me somehow!

    Thanks to everyone in advance!

What is the format of your source videos? I saw in your project media that whatever was highlighted was 720×480 at ~60fps and the audio was MP3. It sounds like you have some non-standard source videos that are probably causing the problem. Particularly what is the format of the video that flickers?

Yes, that’s the one. In the first video (Crash bandicoot) I used was rendered out in virtualdub using deinterlace plugin with x264vfw codec – avi format. Also for some reason it doesn’t reconize the video in vegas 64bit. It only works in 32bit version vegas, just sayin’ if you will find it helpful.

But the thing is, I was using h264 codec mp4 format in the second video (journey one) and I still get this problem!

Could it be the ffdshow h264 codec pack I installed recently? Those videos won’t work on vegas without this codec pack for some reason. And also it’s always glitching if I put 2 video sources at the same time like shown in video examples (bottom left and bottom right). If I render the video with just one video source (bottom left for example) and put another one (bottom right one) above the whole rendered thing and render it again – there is no problem…

[Ged Jurga] “Could it be the ffdshow h264 codec pack I installed recently?”

Most likely. H.264 is NOT a good format for editing, it’s really a final deliver format. I would convert those files to another format that edits easier. If they are SD you can render them to DV AVI or even M-JPEG. You could also use Huffyuv or Lagarith.

Vegas Pro 64 requires that you use a 64-bit codec. I assume the codec you are using is only 32-bit which is why the 64-bit version of Vegas can’t use it.

It’s basically files I get from my Avermedia Game Capture card I use to record my gameplays.

Would you recommend any good converters for converting those files without loosing any quality so I could edit these files on vegas without any problem?

[Ged Jurga] ” It’s basically files I get from my Avermedia Game Capture card I use to record my gameplays.”

See if it will capture using a different codec.

You can try converting them to M-JPEG video with PCM audio using the free AviDemux:

This will edit smoothly in Vegas without problems.

You’re welcome Grazie. It’s important to make sure you are editing a format that can be easily manipulated and rendered. M-JPEG is a good all-round codec for both SD and HD editing.
