  How to Render 16:9 Project to 4:3

  Hi – got a TV spot that was shot and edited at 16:9 for HD TV, but they also want it to be “4:3 safe” for old sets as they do not letterbox.

  Question: I want to render out a test file to see what it will look like center cut, but if I just choose 640×480 for render settings, it’s just squashing the whole thing so everything is thin (stretched vertically).

  What is proper render setting to see what it will look like “center cut” – that is – how it will appear on old TVs?

  Create a new project that is the proper 4:3 aspect (use one of the NTSC or PAL templates). Then drop your HD project into the new project. It will appear as one long event. Go into Pan/Crop on this event, right-click the window and choose Match Output Aspect. This will crop the 16:9 HD to 4:3 SD. Then render your project using whatever 4:3 format the broadcasters require.
