rendering drop-outs and flickering
Hi there… searching Vegas threads is tricky business, seems there are so many different problems and variables. I posted the other week about flicker problems in the edit preview window, and received great advice that solved the problem. However, now I am having problems with the finished render. If I match the settings exactly to the format I shot at, there is no problem. BUT it yields 4 GB for a 20 minute edited clip.. “Smart resample” is enabled, I am not sure what other settings to change. But when trying to downsample to any template or custom render setting to get a web-worthy clip of around 500MB, it is filled with black dropouts and flickering. The only effects I have are on the audio track and I tried muting the entire track to see if that was the problem, but it was not. The clip couldn’t be simpler – One video and one audio track. I even eliminated the overlay track of still photos and just cut them into the main video track, still didn’t help. Here is the info on the raw video file, followed by my system info. Any help is appreciated –

Have you tried rendering using the Mainconcept AVC or
Sony AVC format? These are the formats and templates
best for Web based content renders.Steve Rhoden

I tried the MainConcept template with no luck. I thought I had done the Sony AVC but looking at it again now I am not so sure. Trying it now with the first 512kbs option (I’m not sure what difference the “baseline” option would make), I’ll let you know how it goes.

The 512 was just a test, so then I rendered again in 2128. Worked again, but still looks like crap. I know I shouldn’t have high expectations for a web format but.. man, it’s depressing.
The other two options are 3128 and 6256. Since the latter value is double the former value, I’ll assume there are sound mathematical reasons for this gap, but I wish there was something in between. If my calculations are correct, the resulting file is also doubled – from 500 MB to 1 GB give or take.
It probably belongs in another thread but I wouldn’t mind recommendations for mpeg2 settings to include this clip in a DVD using DVD Architect. A reasonable file size without comprising the quality too much. The footage was shot on the street during Brazilian carnaval, at night and with no lighting other than floodlights set up by the city for a presentation I was involved in. The original bitrate was probably overkill, and I’m starting to think there is logic in shooting in lower quality in such situations to avoid resampling artifacts later
