File Recovery
Anyone know of a good recovery program that I can use on an After Effects file that was damaged during a crash? I kept getting memory errors…and then crash… now, not only will my working file not open, but my back-up files are damaged also…any advice?

Have you tried importing the corrupt file into another AEP? If that doesn’t work, sometimes Adobe techs watch the Adobe forums and I’ve seen them take corrupt files and fix them … sometimes. 🙂
Strange that your backups were damaged. Have you tried deleting AE’s prefs, or uninstalling/reinstalling?

Yea, I tried re-installing everything,importing into a new AEP, I cached the prefs., uninstalled all plugins, re-installed them again…I am at a loss. I thought it was wierd when my back-up files were damaged too, but I think that the entire working directory was some how damaged in “the great crash of 2005” instead of just the AE file I was working…which is why my other file got damaged. ALthough it is weird that only the AE files were affected.
Have you ever used a recovery program on an After Effects file though? I heard that they aren’t recovered properly due to the format.
I will try the Adobe forums, thanks for that…hopefully they can help.
Any other suggestions…toss ’em at me!

years later another suggestion for disgruntled googlers…
yeah AE just crapped out on me, no luck with re-importing project file.
then i thought that the machine basically saves another file anytime i hit ctrl+s, and that that doesn’t necessarily have to be on the same spot on the disk… threw a recovery software at the frigger, searching for deleted and lost files. voilà, got a previous version of the project a couple of hours old…also i find it interesting that it’s allways crapware makers like adobe who don’t enable automatic backups by default. probaly to give their programs an air of stability.

Thanks for the tip, it worked! (Windows 7)
The recovery software I used was: Recuva v1.42.544 its free and worked extremely well for me. Small install and easy to use. I just told it too look in the same folder as the corrupt aep file. After “deep scan” Recuva presented me with a list of all previously saved versions of the file(ie the same file but diferent save times). I recovered a few of the files just to make sure.

File recovery is a really important feature to be able to utilize. If you haven’t set up a file backup system after this has happened I highly recommend you do. I use File Fort as a backup if you are looking for something to get going with.

How did you do it? I Cleared my AE cache files and one project is now corrupted, and I really need to recover it….

Hi Lukas. I have a corrupted AEP project that was overwritten. I am on a Mac and do not have access to the Window program you used to fix your corruption. I am getting ‘End of file’ errors on a Data Rescue recovery. Any chance you can look at my file to see if it can be fixed?
