Project Settings vs. Event Settings vs. Render Settings question
I know about keeping apples to apples wherever possible in project settings, but I’ve still always wondered something about how Vegas thinks:
Do project settings “overrule” individual event settings? Meaning, if I have some upper-field-first footage on a timeline, with project settings to “progressive”, does Vegas make the individual footage progressive (the same as if I’d manually changed that on the footage)?
Same idea as my question about render settings: If I have an upper-field-first project, then select “progressive” when I render, is just doing that the same as if I’d made that the project settings and/or manually changed each video event?
Of the three different places to switch stuff, does one of the places have more “power” over the others?
I have a feeling I’m asking this in a very ignorant way, but I’m not sure how else to ask! If it helps, I can give an everyday example of why I ask this, but my question’s probably long enough for now…

Y’know, I looked at your post and the “Zero” replies and I thought, who’s gonna jump in first or WILL somebody get to answering you before I raised my pennant?
OK, I’ll approach in attempting to answer in this fashion: Here’s what Vegas can do and then what I do. Perhaps that’s a way forward, and then for others wishing to reply . .
Ahem . . . . .
Vegas’s talent has been to be able to deal with MOST flavours of format: Audio and Video and many combinations of formats in-between. It’s been its Party trick for many years. This has meant it has had to have a flexible response to our whims; outputs formats and the various capturing devices out there . . Time Moves on . . . . Things have gotten a little weird and strained out there, and the multitude of Formats (AVCHD and don’t get me started on MP4 and non-globally recognised formats!) have made Vegas the likely U.N. of the NLE World. Apart from being encompassing to the many formats, it can ALSO allow us to adjust at the 3 places you’ve identified as being options for setups. So, on the One Hand we have an NLE that says “Yes” to Formats and again “Yes” as to how we want to then go ahead and work with those formats and then “Yes” to the Output<>Render we want.
I really understand why you’ve asked the question . . . I really do . . .
Now, my workflow is to say:”Hmmmm, what is the majority of my work being delivered in – FOR THIS PROJECT?” If it was SD 720×576 PAL then that’s exactly who I would set up my Project. Easy. If like now I’m shooting with my Canon XF300 – 1440×1080 50i PAL, then again I now set my Project to match my Canon Output. I’ve kept and keep my options tight to the content I use. This means Vegas isn’t forever4 trying to manipulate my MXF files to display at SD. The project matches the the Content – this is good for Previewing and Editing.
Now IF I have any other footage that needs to be converted to a MAIN Project Vegas CAN do that too. So, conversion is also a place that would mean I would fiddle with the settings. This COULD happen at Event level or where ever.
I hope this has gone some way in answering your question; has allowed others to dip in and placed front and centre just why we have these option in Vegas.
I’ll leave the truly VooDoo replies of Why Upper to Lower and the various resolution formats and WHERE one should apply these factors to others. But I did, hopefully, get your ball rolling.
Party tricks are great! However, we also need some understanding to recognise it is a trick and not some trick/confusion of the light! – And then it just becomes too vague and disappointing.

Well, thanks Graham, and I think I follow you, but I’m still left wondering if one “has power” over the other (?)
For example: Let’s say I shoot HD footage that’s upper field first. From there I create a TV spot going out to two cable providers; one wants upper field first, one wants progressive.
For the cable outfit that wants progressive, if I have all my footage on the timeline as upper field first, do I have to change the project settings, the individual events and the output settings to progressive as well, or does changing project settings “override” what’s selected on individual events? Or, does changing render settings do that?
