  • Sony Vegas 11 Pro skipping frames?

Posted by Sam Wright on July 5, 2012 at 3:14 am

    Hi all,
trying to do some motion tracking with BCC Match Move, however it keeps telling me to go back to a previous tracked frame. I understand this is because Sony Vegas is skipping frames. How can I get it to stop skipping frames? Now – being the good citizen I am I have searched and found answers to this exact same problem. The most common answer is to get a powerful computer and allocate enough RAM and CPU to Vegas. Enter – my specs:

  • Intel Core i7 3930k clocked @ 4.2Ghz running 12 threads
  • 16Gb 1600Mhz RAM
  • AMD HD Radeon 7950 w/ 3GB VRAM
  • 64bit Windows 7
  • 2x SSDs running in RAID 0
  • What the heck is the problem!?! 🙂

    Thanks.

      Hi Sam.

You don’t need a more powerful computer. You just need to use RAM Preview (Shift+B). This guarantees that Vegas processes each and every frame. You may have to increase your Dyanmic RAM allocated in your preferences if you need to track a longer clip.

Take a look at my training tutorial and it will show you how to use Match Move with Dynamic RAM Preview:

      Hi John
I watched your tutorial before – thanks – it’s really helpful.

I have been using shift + b (dynamic RAM preview) to do this (with 8gb RAM alotted) and it still only went a few frames before stopping. Regardless, I restarted my computer and it worked fine after this, so I’m not sure what was up there.

Just a side note: is it realistic to expect 1080p to play at best/full with these specs?

      Thanks

Wow, John, that is an amazing plug in! I recently saw a video in which the credits appeared as text “sitting” on a sidewalk as the camera moved along. Would this plug in do that effect?

Yes, that’s how it’s usually done (with match moving)

This comes with Boris Continuum Complete 8 but you can buy just the BCC Motion Tracker unit you get Match Move, Corner Pin, Wire Remover, and Witness Protection plug-ins. Here is the Corner Pinner in action. In this tutorial I map the Boris FX logo onto the side of a moving tractor trailer truck:

John, I’ve installed a demo for Match Move. However, having some trouble getting started. In following your tutorial, I get to the point where I click “Track On-the-Fly,” and instead of the tracking cursor showing up, I get the “Move timeline cursor to a previously tracked frame…” message. I haven’t tracked anything yet…

      Suggestions?

There was something in the line

      “Hi all,

that must have led me to believe this thread concerned Match Move.

If it was generally about match move I would have titled it ‘match move’, but we were discussing the problems I am having, and if you have your own issues then feel free to start your own thread.

[Sam Wright] “Just a side note: is it realistic to expect 1080p to play at best/full with these specs?”

It depends on the codec the 1080p footage uses. Some are easier to decode than others. HDV yes, AVCHD, not so much, DSLR probably not.

If you haven’t tracked anything yet, then move the timeline cursor to the first frame of the clip you applied Match Move to.
