  • Sheet Music overlay?

Posted by Loralyn Staples on July 1, 2012 at 4:17 pm

I have a video of myself demonstrating a certain violin passage, and I wanted to display the sheet music of what I am playing as a cropped video overlay, in the lower left corner.

My project media will accept jpeg and tif files, but it does not show well on screen….it looks scrambled.

Project media does not want to accept pdf.

Does anyone have an idea how to embed a scanned copy of sheet music into the timeline and have it show the notes clearly?

I have Vegas Movie Studio 9.

Hi Loralyn, I would use a PNG file and resize the file to be the same resolution that you will be using for the insert. For example, if you are delivering 1280 x 720 on the Internet, and you want the sheet music to take up the lower 1/4 of your screen, resize it to 640 wide by however long it needs to be (assuming the sheet music is taller than it is wide). Then you can scroll the sheet music into view on the lower 1/4 of the screen and still have it fill the entire quarter of the screen wide. Resizing it with a good image editing program will yield better results than having Movie Studio resize it. Feel free to ask questions if I didn’t explain it thorough enough.

    Hi John!
Thank you for the to-the-point advice, as usual!
I followed your advice, and it was 10x better….however, still very blurry. The original .png was clear, but once it gets into Vegas, it gets very blurry.

    Any ideas?
I’ve looked for ways to save with higher resolution (when changing the size down to a quarter), but I don’t see any resolution options.

It’s very hard to represent something as intricate as sheet music in a video. The only option to making it clearer is making it bigger. Maybe you can use the lower third of your screen and show one line at a time across the bottom with you demoing on top. This would double the length that is displayed and should make it a lot clearer.

Hey, John, you just gave me an idea. I could make the SHEET MUSIC the bottom, main video, and I could put ME doing the demonstration as the video overlay.

Thanks for all your help and advice. Your expertise is very appreciated!
