  • which music composition looping software and library do you use?

Posted by Gilles Gagnon on June 16, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Having a musical background and some training I sometime create music beds for videos. I’ve used Cubase and VSTis.

I’d like to invest in a looping software and library so I don’t have to continually hunt for loops.

Which do you use/recommend? Ableton Live, Adobe Audition, Kontakt, other?

I look forward to the members’ thoughts on this.

I used to use Smartsound many years ago, but since switching to Vegas, I haven’t used anything. Smartsound does not have a Vegas plugin.

I use layered tracks from Digital Juice. While they are not loops you can re-mix them for the perfect fit. I do this right in Vegas. For two seasons, I have made my intro, go to break, and credits music.

I use Sony ACID Pro for my loop based work. This is what it was designed to do an the Loop Libraries from Sony are quite extensive. If you like composing with loops then ACID would be my first choice. The ACID Music Studio version should be enough but even the Free ACID Xpress should be fine for casual use. I would download ACID Xpress and see if you like it.

I guess I should have elaborated also. I use Acid Music Studio 8.0 to assemble parts I create in Sound Forge Audio Studio. Sound Forge allows me to sample simple audio clips or recorded sounds from my local environment and manipulate them to become what I desire. And, as I said, Acid Music Studio is available to construct audio scenes from those manipulated clips.

You’re right Nigel. I contacted them a while back and they had no plans on making it available for Vegas. When I hear such comments I tend to re-evaluate whether I should switch to Premiere.

Too bad because I hear smartsound/Sonicfire is fantastic.

    Thanks John and Kelly.

John, just checked the SONY site for Acid Music Studio. it’s not clear to me if it comes with an extensive set of loops/samples. Do you know off hand or must I spend a fortune on creating a lib from scratch?

Another question, do you know how it compares to Ableton Live?

Having a plug-in would be nice but it’s not a show stopper. SmartSounds has a great standalone interface for finding and recomposing music. All you do is tell it to make you a piece for the duration you need and then it renders it out so you can drop it in Vegas. Not a big deal.

I understand what you mean John. I think I prefer the idea of having a full set of loops with software so I don’t contnually have to purchase the “albums” from Smartsound. it can get a bit pricey.
