Want to make a movie with jpeg sequences and need to know what to do to get smooth 24fps
Posted by Marc Thalmann on June 5, 2012 at 8:52 pmHey folks,
the title summarizes it pretty much what I am looking for. I shot a short movie and made jpeg sequences of it, to edit them via batchprocessing in photoshop, a HDR look.
now, I imported them to Sony Vegas Pro 11, set up 24fps etc, but the clip is slower than the original and I can’t synchronize the jpegclip with the sound. I really don’t know why and even if I try in options/preferences to change the time setup for the frames – it doesn’t change anything.
What can I do, to have my jpeg as my original footage working in 24fps so that it flawlessly works with the original audio?
Thanks for taking time and your help,
Best

June 5, 2012 at 9:54 pmInteresting, this is something I’ve wanted to try (frame-by-frame application of Photoshop filters), but never had the time or need.
I have used image sequences for time-lapse. I don’t normally work in 24P – is that what the camera shoots?
Try this, mark a region of exactly one second and export that as an image sequence. How many frames did it make?

June 5, 2012 at 10:15 pmHi Stepehen,
if you use the plugins or whatever on photoshop for a special idea or sequence it can be very interesting but a time-eater, if you don’t have a fast computer.
yeah, my gh2 can shoot in 24fps and I wanted the exact movement when importing the sequence into sony vegas, but the video is a bit slower than the original and I can’t sync the audio.

June 5, 2012 at 11:01 pmWhat are the media properties of the footage you’ve made in Photoshop that you’re putting in your Vegas project? I’ve never worked with Photoshop, but that would be the first thing I’d check. If it’s been changed from 24 fps, then Photoshop did something to it.

Mark is working with an image sequence, so Photoshop is working on individual frames.

Mark – do the experiment I outlined above. How many images does a one-second image sequence export generate?

June 6, 2012 at 12:20 amI hope im understanding you correctly, why dont you try
rendering it first at the frame rate the jpeg sequence is in,
then drop that back into Vegas and then, set it at 24fps and
render out.Steve Rhoden

June 6, 2012 at 6:07 amHi John,
because it would be like rendering a slow-mo video of 60p in 24fps.
what i need is that my jpegsequence is in sync with my original audio.

June 6, 2012 at 3:56 pmTwo quick things:
1) Vegas likes the PNG format better than most others from Photoshop.
2) You don’t say what your computer specs are. Is the “lag” being created by a slow computer? One way to find out is to render out a few seconds to a Quicktime or MPEG2 format and watch it. My computer is sometimes a little underpowered and will lag while editing (i.e. is not “real-time”), but when I view the rendered output on “loop”, it will eventually clear up completely.Andrew Lenczycki

June 7, 2012 at 1:41 amI just made of an existing videofile a jpegsequence, turned the pics into HDR range and imported them as a jpegsequence. Sony Vegas has to put the frames together to get the oroginal 24 frames, so that it looks as the original.

June 7, 2012 at 1:44 amHi Andrew,
I created with Sony the jpegsequences, so it shouldn’t have any problems with them and I guess that the jpegs have more information than the png’s.
2.) I don’t think that it depends on the computer specs, because I have no problems to render videos for example. it has something to do with the timeline. vegas doesn’t put the frames in the length that I need to have 24 frames per second.
But I will make a test by rendering the sequence in the formats you proposed.
