I’ve run up against this several times but I usually just ignore it. Let’s say I had some files in a project but I deleted them from the timeline, then removed them from the media pool and saved the project. For some reason when I load some projects, Vegas will throw me the pop-up looking for the long discarded files. Normally, I just click “Ignore selected media and leave offline” but I’d like to figure out why Vegas is even still looking for these files and how I can fix this.

Vegas is looking for the file because it is used somewhere in the project. Are you using embedded veg files?

Hi Steve, thanks for stepping in. I’m not sure what you mean by embedded (at least not in terms of a Vegas project file). What separates an embedded file from a regular project file?

An embedded veg file is when there is a veg file on the timeline. This is really handy if, for example, you have the same opening sequence for all your videos. You just make the opening once and save it as a Vegas project (veg file). Whenever you need that opening sequence, you just drop the veg file on your timeline.

Vegas will look for all files in all veg files in your project.

Vegas is looking for a file because it *is* somewhere in your project.

NOTE – this icon removes the unused media from the currently open veg file. IT DOES NOT remove unused media from embedded veg files.

A ha. Thanks for the clarification, Steve. I THOUGHT that’s what you meant by embedded but I’ve learned to confirm. *grin*

No, the projects in question don’t contain any embedded files, which is why I’m confused. I’ll try the lightning bolt and see if that helps. Usually, when I remove all files manually, that does the trick but every now and then it seems some crumbs fall into some cracks somewhere and Vegas forms an opinion about them. 🙂

If you export an EDL (tools, scripting) then look at it with a text editor like Notepad, you can get an idea where the project is using the file.
