advice needed
Can you watch the 4 min video above and let me know if something like this is do-able in Sony Vegas. Now I know anything is probably possible with your skill level, but I’m considering heading into editing as a career move and would like to know if I need to know a new system (Mac-Avid etc..) or other? These guys Marrone video blew me away (check out their site for more).. and just wondering what direction I should head in.

There is nothing in the video that can’t be done in Vegas. In fact, it’s all pretty simple stuff. The hardest part I saw was the camera work in the motion shots. I didn’t care for some of the color treatment, but that’s just me.

Well that’s exactly what I wanted to hear, very encouraging. I really like Vegas and it’s functionality. Not having to go to Premiere or After Effects etc to get this look is great to hear. Other than some online video tutorials is there any other advice you can offer? Other than the tutorials on this site for Vegas, anything else online that you know of that can further advance me?

I sit next to a guy who uses Premiere Pro. Vegas blows it away. In 20 minutes I can do what takes him an hour or two. He has to work on audio externally.
I know I’m gonna get a lot of heat from the adobe crowd on this post! Good luck if you want to write a script to automate your workflow.

I have dabbed in Premiere and I agree compared to Vegas, it just doesn’t seem as fluid.. yet why are so many industry people using it or FCP over Vegas? They seem to be the standard no?

I think because in big outfits, managers who have never used a camera or edited video are picking out the platform. And they all fall for the Photoshop integration stuff. I have Photoshop integrated with Vegas.

They and everyone else knows that Vegas get a lot done faster than
Premiere… Man!,Always such a relief that i dont have to do my

how so? plug ins? you can use psd files in vegas you mean?

Yes, right-click and drag a psd file and when you drop it on the timeline it allows you to add layers across tracks or time. Also there is a plugin somewhere that allows you to open graphics in your graphic editor right from the timeline.

That’s pretty simple to do. Shooting that video takes a lot more preparation and proper equipment than editing it in Vegas and getting it to look how your link does. If you’re shooting on a DSLR, as it appears that the wedding video you linked to was shot on, at least if it’s a Canon, then I set my picture setting to “Neutral” which helps decrease dynamic range while shooting, giving the video more flexibility when you color grade it afterwards. Otherwise, you’re more locked into how you shot it with one of the other picture profiles, and the colors tend to break down with even a little adjusting.
And if you have the software for a Canon DSLR you’re shooting on, I’ve read about videographers who will use it to reduce the dynamic range further in the camera while shooting so that everything’s sort of flatter and grayer while shooting, but the benefit of that is the highlights don’t blow out as easily and you don’t crush blacks as much while shooting. This lets you adjust all of that more easily while editing.

It’s called Open in Graphics Editor and is a GREAT tool that has been on my timeline ever since I discovered it.
