  Program stripped of commercials is larger than original

  Hello,

  Newbie here. I recently purchased Vegas Pro 11 and need a little advice. I’ve captured a basketball game from my DVR with a Hauppauge HD PVR. It’s in .m2ts format. Total running time = 2hr, 8min. Size is 6.87GB. I stripped out the commercials and halftime with Vegas and ‘rendered as’ Sony AVC/MVC = AVCHD 1920×1080-60i. The resulting output is larger than the original. It’s now 1hr, 31min but 9.94GB.

  Using MediaInfo:

  The original is:
  MPEG-TS: 6.87GiB, 2h 8mn Maximum Overall bit rate: 18.0 Mbps

  First video stream:
  6 894 Kbps, 1920*1080 (16:9), at 29.970 fps, AVC (Main@L4.0) (CABAC / 4 Ref Frames)

  — — — —

  The new file is:
  BDAV: 9.94GiB, 1h 31mn Maximum Overall bit rate: 18.0 Mbps

  New video stream:
  14.8 Mbps, 1920*1080 (16:9), at 29.970 fps, AVC (High@L4.0) (CABAC / 2 Ref Frames)

  What do I use for the output format to retain the quality if the input file? I’d like to burn an AVCHD file to use in my BD player. I can get the original on a DL disc but not the second.

  Also, the new file doesn’t play correctly in certain players. It’s fine in Media Player Classic (freebie), but in WMP, the video gets choppy at the 6:30 mark – audio is fine. VLC (freebie) has a problem 25 seconds in and the video stops for 10 sec, plays for 5 secs, and repeats. Audio is fine. All 3 play the original perfectly.

  I haven’t burned a DVD yet, so I don’t know how it plays in my BD player.

  Encoded filesize is 99.9% determined by the bitrate. You more than doubled the bitrate of the video, and given the shorter time, the numbers sound about right.

  Encode your new video at the original bitrate of 6894 Kbps and the resulting file will be smaller.
