  OT: S-L-O-W Copying from CF Card over USB 2.0 in Windows 7

  Did my first shoot using my CF card data video recorder and had to transfer 5 GB of files off it via a card reader. The card is rated at 60 MB/s, but the copying process took forever (about 1 hour), with transfer speeds well below 2 MB/s on average. Normal USB 2.0 speeds are around 7 MB/s via my portable HDD, so what gives?

  There are some articles on Google that suggest Windows 7 is the problem, but none seem to offer a solution other than use Windows XP. I just consigned my old XP system to the knackers, so I cannot test that theory.

  Given that you guys (and gals) probably transfer large files all the time on card media, I am hoping someone has a simple fix that works.

  My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

  Is the card reader really USB 2.0 or is it only USB 1.1 (even though it’s plugged into a 2.0 port)? You might want to try copying the data by plugging your camera directly into a USB 2.0 port and see if it’s faster? If it is… it may be your card reader.

  Unfortunately the CF card is in a DN60 Datavideo recorder hooked up by firewire to the Z1P which has a dead tape transport mechanism. It was cheaper to buy the DN60 from B&H photo with international postage than to fix the tape mechanism!

  I tried hooking the DN60 by firewire to my PC, but it does not access it as a drive. I might buy a more modern card reader as I don’t recall when I got it. It could be USB 1.1, but I have no way of telling on my readers.

  It was the card reader. Got one that was USB 2.0. Still takes 9 minutes to copy 2GB, but that is better than 1 hour.
