  • Rendering unusual sized video for broadcast specs

I’ve made a few threads about this but want to explain my main issue with finishing a video for a client and see if there’s any way around recutting the commercial using 24 hours or so of footage they have from the original shoots. I’m pretty sure that’s my option, but maybe someone has an idea.

-A client of mine gave me digital copies of videos that another company made for them two years ago. It’s four videos, all of them commercials. They’re mpeg2, 720×512, PAR of .9481. It’s an unusual size, but my initial thought was, “Well, that’s what they want,” not realizing this would be for broadcast. Because of the video’s unusual size, there’s a horizontal bar of black over the top of the video. I can cover that up with some layers of color, but the real problem is bottom of the video has a kind of white bar with text on how to contact the company, which is not broadcast safe in the current resolution.

-The finished video has to be mpeg2 at the current resolution, or, mov (Pro Res, to be exact), at 720×486. Rendering to this resolution makes for vertical letterboxing. I can crop the video to make it fit, but then I’m losing resolution as well as making the text at the bottom go out of the safe area.

I’m thinking I’ll just have to go through all their footage and recreate the commercial as closely as possible, but it seems like I’m so close-there must be a way of doing this. The text at the bottom of the video not being broadcast safe is what is so strange. The video is at the correct resolution for mpeg2, so how can I make that bottom text broadcast safe? I may try moving it up on the screen, which will block even more of the action.

Finally, the video has to be in 4:2:2. Any programs that will make mpeg2 video?

Try this: Start a new project, go into Project Properties (Alt+Enter) and set your project for your output resolution (I assume NTSC IMX (720×486, 29.970 fps) since you spoke about rendering to 720×486). Then make sure that Adjust source media to better match project to render settings is NOT checked. This will absolutely mess things up when cropping odd resolutions. That should set your project up correctly.

Next drop your footage into the timeline, click on Event Pan/Crop on the event that it creates and right-click on the frame in Pan/Crop and select Match Output Aspect. This will create a crop rectangle that will be the exact aspect of your project. Move this to crop the part of the video that you want to keep.

Finally, render to Sony MXF using the NTSC MPEG IMX 50 template. That will get you broadcast quality 422 MPEG2 video in an MXF container. There is a 422 setting in MainConcept MPEG2 but it doesn’t work for me (renders black video). You might want to try that. i.e., in MainConcept MPEG2 set the Profile to 422 and see if it renders correctly.

    Thanks, John.

I take that back about 720×486. I can render the video in it’s native 720×512 in mpeg2. Aside from that, done.

Oh boy. The problem I see with this is that it changes the resolution to 690.3×512, and the video has to be 720×512 with a par of 9:10.

How do I set the MainConcept mpeg2 Profile to 422? The only place I can see where it’s adjustable is under “Advanced Video” and “Sampling”, but it’s grayed out. And in Vegas 11 I have no option to render to Sony MXF, though it’s available on Vegas 10, which I still run.

I tried recreating the project in Vegas 10 to render to Sony MXF, and while I can change the color to 422, the problem is I can only do it under HD resolution, and this project needs to be 720×512.

And under mpeg2 render settings, no matter what permutations of settings I seem to try, I can’t get the sampling tab to work-it’s still grayed out.

[Angelo Mike] “How do I set the MainConcept mpeg2 Profile to 422?”

I also answer this in your other post but here are the changes I made to the Program Stream NTSC to get 4:2:2 720×512 MPEG2 render:
