  Video formats

  What is the best video format to work with in Sony Vegas, that won’t take up a lot of space either? Many of the formats I try don’t open in vegas, so I convert them to AVI – M-JPEG with Avidemux, but that format takes a HUGE amount of space! Is there any other that won’t make my Vegas crash and still not take up that much space? I am working with series of 1-hour long episodes. A single ep came at around 9 GB, it would be insane to convert all the files I have to that format. I need some ideas please.

  The Sony AVC codec is my choice!

  Even though prices have gone up, buying another hard drive or two is your best bet.
  I used to use the DV-AVI format (13 GB./hr.) but, with the switch to HD, am now using MXF format (18 GB./hr.).

  Converting to another format (unless it’s lossless) is never recommended.
  As far as your computer crashing, we need more information (processor, RAM, version of Vegas, size and number of hard drives, type of source footage) before we can help you.

  I most often use Quicktime Photo-JPEG.
