  • Upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit from Windows XP – Sony Vegas Etc Questions

Posted by Eric Monian on February 15, 2012 at 9:48 pm

    Hey Guys,

I am planning on upgrading to Windows 7 64 bit this weekend, and had some questions:

    1. I am currently using Sony Vegas Imaginations Studio 2.0 – So contains Vegas Platinum 10, Acid Pro, Sound forge, Sony Cinescore, DVD Architect. I realize I won’t gain any performance since this is still 32 bit program but:
a – Since I need to do clean install (XP to W7) is it okay to just deinstall all the programs, and then reinstall after I’m on W7? Sony won’t think I’m trying to do another install etc. and cause any issues?
b – I’m planning on backing up my projects on an external HD, so when I reinstall after the upgrade I can just drag and drop the projects back into the Sony project folders. Am I missing something, or could it be that easy?
c – I also have Sony Platinum 9.0. I wasn’t planning to load that back up, so thought I would open all the projects in Sony Vegas 10 and then resave the projects so they’d be ‘transferred’ to the Sony Vegas 10 projects folder. Again, am I thinking about this the right way?
d – Last thing related to all the videos and pictures used in the projects. Again I’ll be backing them up on the external HD, but do you know if Windows 7 has the same file pathway for MyPictures so when I load them back in folders, Sony Vegas can find them again?

Thank you so much in advance for all your help,
    Eric

There is no upgrade path from XP to Windows 7. You must do a clean install. My recommendation is that you buy a new hard-disk and perform a really clean install of Windows 7.

    Clean-installing with Upgrade media
This workaround is fully supported by Microsoft. There’s already a whole article dedicated to this topic, but here’s the short version:

Install Windows in trial mode. Do not input the product key.
    Restart
Install Windows as an upgrade. this time enter the product key.

    Thanks Stephan,

    I appreciate the response.

I don’t have the cash to get a new drive though. How about I dBan it? Or better, run truecrypt to scramble the drive, then dban. Should have it be clean then to reformat.

The only thing is that I have an Upgrade edition not the full version. So not sure I could do the above since I’m assuming I need to install while I have the XP up and running.

And just to confirm, so do I need to de-install Sony Vegas etc, or can I just have the clean Windows 7 and then re-install?

    Thanks,
    Eric

I’ve never done a upgrade, I have always installed a new hard disk then a clean install. I don’t know what dban is.
I think you can do a multi-boot installation, but I can’t help you on that.

I was whining about upgrading to windows 7 a few months ago. I was feeling like it was a mountain to climb.

Steve suggested the above, which, in essence, is to load the windows 7 on one hard drive while keeping xp on the original hard drive

I spent 5 weeks getting all the drivers, and little utilites updated to the windows 7, but now it works great. And if I forgot something I still have xp hanging off this machine.

Thanks for your nudge and encouragement STeve

I also think that installing Win7 on another HDD is a very good idea because if something happened you will be able to load your previous OS (XP) and try again.

You don’t need to uninstall Vegas (and other programs) before upgrade.

For backing up all your Vegas project you have to copy all veg-files and all related media files. If the media files will be on the same place (the same drive letters and the same path) that the veg files should be opened flawless after upgrade.

    > do you know if Windows 7 has the same file pathway for MyPictures so when I load them back in folders, Sony Vegas can find them again?

Unfortunately, the paths to “My Pictures” directory on XP and Win7 are different. On XP it started from “C:Documents and SettingsUSER… “, on Win7 it started from “C:UsersUSER…”
So if many of your media files are located in “My Pictures” directory it could be complicated (you will have many questions from Vegas because after upgrade because it will not be able to find the media files).
However, you can save all your Vegas projects to the external HDD using “File | Save As” menu item in Vegas with checking option “Copy medias with project”.
In this case all media files that are used in project will be copied in the same directory where your veg-file is saved.

    Thank You Mikhail!!

Wow, that pathway issue is going to kill it for me. Thanks for the tip about saving with the media along with the project. I would have been in a bad place.

I guess that teaches me to have a dedicated place for my media for the Vegas projects I work on. I started out using Vegas as a small hobby so didn’t do much work flow processes around it. Looks like now I might need to think how best to set things up so next time I’m not scrambling with pathway issues.

    Thanks again for the help!

About paths changes: actually, Win7 has links from all previous paths to the new ones. Maybe it will work after upgrade.

If I press Win+R and type
    C:\Documents and Settings\USER
    and
    C:\Users\USER
that I’ll see absolutely the same content.
However, I don’t know for sure how Vegas will handle this.
