DVD plays ok on PC, choppy on PS2
I rendered my animation at 24fps, 720×480 (16:9) and imported it into Vegas to burn it on a DVD to be played back on a TV. The animation was originally 720×405 as it had to be widescreen but it was automatically adjusted by Vegas. The dvd after being burnt plays smooth if I play it on my PC’s DVD drive just as I’d play any other movie. But when I play it on a TV using a Playstation 2 as a DVD player, the video is not smooth. Jerky or choppy – plays for 2 seconds, stops for half a second then plays again. Its like you drive your car, hit the brakes, drive again, hit the brakes…you get the idea. The audio is fine though. I also tried playing other DVD movies (on DVD-R discs) on that playstation2 and they played back smoothly. Here are the video settings I have in Vegas followed by the properties of the .VOB file itself on the burnt DVD. The DVD was burned at 6x speed.

That data rate is pretty high at 9500kbps. That’s right at the edge of the DVD spec. Try burning at a lower 8000kbps and see if that helps.

Thank you very much for your advice, John. Basically there were no customization parameters in Vegas for it. But now that you’ve pointed it out, I think it plays fine on a PC DVD ROM because maybe those drives can read higher data rates. Maybe PS2 cannot. I wonder how a modern standalone DVD player would handle this. By the way, I noticed your website and the Vegas tutorials on it – any chance you could suggest a way to edit the bit rate? I can’t seem to change it as the only modifiable parameter was the writing speed.

You can control the data rate when you render. Select the template as usual and then click on Custom. On the Video tab you can set the data rate to be VBR or CBR. You can set it to CBR of 8,000,000.

Yes, that seems to be the only appropriate way to adjust the bitrate. Actually I did not have secondary DVD authoring software so what I did was (in Vegas)go to the Tools Menu > Burn Disc > DVD and then the dialogue box appears where you specify writing properties. Apparently, there isn’t a way to control the bitrate using this method of DVD burning. -

Yea, that’s definitely the “no frills” way of doing it and I’m surprised it uses such a high bit-rate because the default render templates don’t.
