Sony HDR CX160 Playback at 24p
Hello. I just got the Sony HDR cx160 and it’s a great camera. However, I didn’t realize it only shoots 60i/p. Well, I’ve decided I want to shoot a movie with only this camera, but I don’t want that dreaded home movie look. I’ve done some research that says there are ways to convert to 24p, but I wanted to get an expert opinion.
I’m not going to shoot HD, I’m going to shoot widescreen 720p. I will also probably shoot in 60i. (If I should do 60p instead please let me know). Next, once I’m done filming I want to edit it to have that “cinema” feel. I know a lot of things like lighting, camera technique, etc play into this, but I’m talking strictly technical. I’m going to get Sony Vegas as my editing software, so is there a way to change my playback to 24p? Also, if there are any of you with any advice on how to get the “film” look with the cx160 and Sony Vegas I am all ears! Thank you very much!

You can try Cineform Neoscene, though it’s at your own peril, in my opinion. I used to use that to convert my footage to avi, which played back faster than the AVCHD that came out of my cameras. And it can convert footage to 24p. However, avi footage has made Vegas unuseable to me after Vegas 9, and it now locks up any time I put avi footage on a project. So don’t delete the raw video, and you can try a free trial of Cineform Neoscene before buying it.
The other thing I think you could do is load your project and set the project properties to the 60i footage. Now, someone may correct me on the correct method, but from there, I believe you can just right click the clips themselves on the timeline, go to properties, and click “Disable resample”. That will make Vegas remove the extra frames when you render. And render your project to 23.976 fps and in progressive scan.
