    Hi All

I have a dvd-r disc udf encoded. It contains solely three vob files. Each of these is a small piece(approx 15 mins) of amateur camcorder video. To be honest, I don’t know how this dvd has been chopped and mashed, I suspect there were at one time more vobs, but anyway that is not the main problem.

I have extracted each vob file to my hard drive so that I may edit with Vegas. This is the strange thing; vob1 and vob2 can be opened by vegas but vob3 crashes vegas after about 56% of ‘Building Peaks’. However, VLC media player can succesfully play this vob3 file.
Upon further investigation, by importing vob3 into windows movie maker, I notice movie maker thinks this has a length of over 25 hours, and consequently movie maker wont edit it!! (It actually is 15 mins on VLC).

    Can anyone please help me?

    Regards

    Antoine

All I can suggest is to rename the problem file from .vob to .mpg and see if that helps.

You can try File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc…. If that doesn’t work, try a tool called Womble. It will convert the VOB to an MPEG2 file without re-encoding so there will be no loss in quality.

Thank you so much for your reply John.
I tried the Womble program (free 30 day trial). Discovered that there were additional timebases in the vob3 file(mainly menu fragments). I removed these and saved a mpg. Vegas now has no problem opening it. Womble is a nice looking piece of software – Thanks once again.

Yea, it’s definitely worth having in your kit. I don’t use it often, but when I do, it’s the only tool for the job.
