  HD Video Files Converted to MPEG2 Crash Sony Vegas

  Hi Guys,

  This is my first time posting in this forum. I have read a lot of the threads here and have found a lot of the content very helpful.

  So here is my issue hoping someone can explain why this is happening.

  I have a Flip Ultra HD video camera which records HD video at 1280 x 720 at 60 frames per second outputting H.264 video compression, AAC audio compression, MP4 files format.

  I tried importing these MP4 files into Vegas and my system is clearly not powerful enough as the preview window was lagging to the point of being unusable.

  I decided to convert the videos to MPG2 using Winavi Video Converter keeping the original picture size. Once completed i tried opening this file in Vegas and it crashed the program numerous times and I was never able to import these converted MPEG2 files.

  I then used a different converter program called Sonne Video Converter on the original Flip MP4 files and converted them to MPEG2 but with a reduced frame size of 720×480. To my surprise these opened in Vegas perfectly and the preview window flowed smoothly.

  So i would like to know why Vegas would be crashing on the MPEG2 files with the larger screen resolution and work fine smaller and also will i really be losing anything quality wise by using the smaller res files and making them into a dvd.

  I believe this is a software problem (but could be wrong) but my computer specs are

  Processor
  3.20 gigahertz Intel Pentium D
  16 kilobyte primary memory cache
  2048 kilobyte secondary memory cache
  64-bit ready
  Multi-core (2 total)
  Not hyper-threaded

  RAM: 3GB

  Display
  NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT [Display adapter]
  ASUS VW193T [Monitor] (19.1″vis, s/n
  82LMTF132672, February 2008)
  Generic Non-PnP Monitor

  I only just realised that according to my Belarc advisor read out that Hyper Threading is not enabled (but can be) and this system more than adequately handles the smaller res MPEG2 files.

  Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

  Its Simple Kane. The Winavi Video Converter
  encodes its mpeg2 in a format that doesnt
  sits well with Vegas….the other does.

  Thanks for the response.

  I guess i will have to try converting with Sonne using the original frame size and see if the problem persists.

  I suspect that the WINAVI Video Convertor conversion process may not conform strictly to Microsoft’s AVI specifications, hence your issues. This being a 3rd party tool, the developer may have altered the conversion algorithm, which is why problems are surfacing.

  If you can avoid transcoding or converting footage, do so.
