Time Crunch
I have a showing tonight on a projector and I am using 1280 x 720 WMV. It seems to look well enough but I NEED to do the titles – ugh! I was going to put the WMV segments on a timeline and add the titles and then render again as the same WMV. So is there more of a quality loss? Any other suggestions?
I’m concerned because of the 12 hours left before my showing and I so I don’t have time to do much more. Also, I was just going to show the WMV out the HDMI port on my laptop.

If you still have the original project, I’d add the titles and render it again.
This will be quicker (and look much better) than adding titles to the WMV file and re-rendering as you will take a quality hit. -
thanks for the reply – the issue for me is that each piece is in a separate segment – it’s MESSY!! – I just wonder HOW bad a rerender would be – I know i could test it but i’m scrambling at this point.

If by “separate segments” you mean separate veg files, start a new project, import all of them, drop them on the timeline in the correct order and add your titles.
This is called “nesting” and a lot of us do this a lot.
As far as a quality hit, I have no idea as I’ve never done that before.
A very short test (one minute or less) will show you what it would look like. -
Thanks for the helpful reply Mike. I had tried nesting but it kept crashing the app. Both the 32 and 64 bit in 10 and 11. This is a little while back though and maybe it would work again.
Actually- the project is in the same timeline but like 60 tracks – its messy and has me buggin out.
I will have to do that test. Wish nesting worked. I should try it again. And with nesting – how does it select WHAT will play among the nests. For each nest does it play from “one” or do I select within each veg file the section I want to play – meaning out of a 3 minute veg, I can just select where my “one” is on that timeline for then, nesting in the master nest timeline? Makes sense? Basically where does each nested veg start from? one or wherever I set it?

And I heard a while back that if you render back out to the same format and settings, it won’t actually create a new more lossy render – probably not true though. Hmmmmm…to test to test….scary day with this deadline!!!! Yikes!

Michael, to get the project done for tonight (and preserve your sanity!!), do what you were originally going to do and don’t worry about the potential quality loss.

When I used to do graduation videos for my kid’s grade school, I would do each segment (there were 5 of them) as a separate project.
When I was ready for the final render, I would import each veg file, drop it on the timeline in the correct order and render for DVD.
There was always a music track for each one so I’d let the final image and music stay up for an extra 5 or so seconds to allow for a transition from one to another.
Does it make sense now? -
You are my friend!!! I was in a mad rush with two videos playing in a theater for my client’s Holiday/2012 Business Bash. There was a lot of press and people. I literally delivered the two videos 10 minutes before presentation. I rendered the 13 minute video and watched it on my android tablet while the other 6 minute video was rendering. Then I watched that one in the car while my GF drove. They both looked and sounded great. Sure they were a little dithered for the big screen – but in the day and age of YouTube – people don’t really care much if the story is good. My bonus is that I’m more of music composer than anything (lots of network credits) and so the pacing and music make up for any video.
I am glad I took the route for my piecing it all together – that way the rendering times (if there are any changes) are not a constant full length render.
The WMV looks really good on most screens although again – on the big screen – it wasn’t ideal – but did the client or anyone say anything?? Nope. They were so elated and excited – the CEO even picked me up and hugged me at the end. And this guy is NOT a creative! So that was monumental.
Now, it’s tweaking the final videos before we put on the web. I do have some questions on the quality and those lines (interlacing), coloring and other issues that some more experienced help n Vegas (like yourself) may be very valuable. The forums or the web can take a bit of time to get a clear answer. I’d even pay for consulting.
Thanks again for you last minute support and words of comfort. When you sent your last note – it made all the difference in the world that in the end, it would be decent for what I needed.

Mike? You still there on this thread? I wanted to find some consulting help (I will pay) with my project formatting. The project is the same as above but now we are wrapping up and the issue of uploading for YouTube and DVD is bothering me. Seemingly simple but the project is a bit of a format nightmare in that the footage includes news footage of all format types as well as graphics, pictures and a range of quality from small-res to HD 16:9. The color is all over the map too. Many shots are being sped up or slowed down as well. A good chunk was shot in MTS 16:9 and that is the ratio I’ve setup in my project settings.
Now, I’m not looking for a miracle nor an obsessive attention to perfection. I just want it overall smooth and clear. I want to find solutions and understanding with the issues and questions I have – such as why these lines (interlace??) are on some shots in my renders and NOT on others. The raw is fine. The format I render a segment out to has everything to do with how they show up and I don’t know if I should render each segment out as a different format based on the material within it. The 12 minute video is hours worth of stuff inside of that small bit of time. Like I said – the source footage is all over the map.
I have not worked with nesting in this project because at the beginning there were nesting rendering issues and I decided to skip it – hence the concern of the correct format with renders!! Furthermore, my uncompressed AVI templates keep crashing! For that showing last week, I used WMV and they looked pretty good overall except for some higher motion segments where those lines were becoming more apparent. With the MP4 and mt2s format, the picture is more more clear and smooth (color seems darker though) but the myriad of settings are just confusing to me because I don’t know if I should render for YouTube or DVD!! And remember, I have to render the each segment and THEN make a FINAL render of the timeline. And yes, I’ve read TONS of forums and posts on a myriad of formats and watched YouTube like an addict.
So what I’ve been doing is placing the rendered segments (the most recent try was MP4) on the timeline and then I add news media bumpers between those segments (it’s easier to experiment and make things crossfade better) and make other edits accordingly. I might be compelled to try again and with EACH segment into a separate nest but that sure seems like a pain because of the complex setup I have now.
I am confused about H264 and it seems that Vegas does NOT render/export that format?? It sounds like a good solution.
What is a reasonably lossless quality format I can use for the first render and then a for my final? Should I render the final as two different formats (one for YouTube and one for DVD?) I also would rather not go through a million steps such as with the handbrake and such since if there is another change – I don’t want that nightmare of all the backtracking.
I’m not looking for an Oscar in best format output but I have to believe this isn’t that hard and that I can render a good quality.
