  • still can’t realtime playback preview in Sony Vegas…and can’t figure out why

Can anyone please help…I’ve done everything I know or can find on the internet to realtime playback my previews in Sony Vegas. I still get 1 fps or so. I can’t work this way.
    My system: Intel(R) Core (TM)2 Quad CPU Q9450 @ 2.66 GHz 2.67GHz
    RAM: 4,00GB
    64 bits windows 7
    NVidia Geforce 9600 GT.
I use Vegas movie studio platinum 11. And now also trial of Vegas Pro 11 because it has GPu acceleration. That’s on, I can see that in the preferences. Doesn’t make any difference though.
I am working with MVC files from sony TD10, so the stereoscopic files. should work with Vegas natively. They do, but I dont get preview playback. I’ve got a clean system; just recently installed Win7 and Vegas.
I’ve got project settings and fileproperties the same.
    Can anyone please help?
    Thanks

You cannot get real-time Playback in the preview window during
editing, with the system that you have and the file format you
    are working with.

    Thanks Steve for answering.
Just to clarify the answer: is my system not good enough even with a previewsetting of “quarter” in the previewsettings?
And do you know what systemrequirements there are to work with .m2ts files, stereoscopic files from sony TD10?
    thanks again,
    Hans

A quad-core and only 4Gb of RAM is close to the minimum that I would ever try editing any HD format. My prior editing PC was just that and it would handle AVI files from the PD-150 just fine, but it was just not fast enough to keep up with the HDV from my Z1’s, and crawled under the decoding weight of AVCHD.

Thanks Steve for clearing that part of my questions. I will look around to find out what I need to be able to work with m2ts files.
    regards
    Hans.

Most people when HDV first came out used proxy files. One of the easiest tools is the Vasst Gearshift. (https://vasst.com/store/sony-vegas-plug-ins/gearshift.aspx)

With Gearshift, you edit in a low-resolution AVI file (low compared to the HDV), but when you encode your output in the “Render As” menu, Gearshift replaces the loe-res proxy with the original HD clips.

Others use an intermediate CODEC like Cineform and transcode the HD video into a less compressed format that is easier on the CPU.

Or, like me, I just built another PC around the i7-2600 chip.

I went to the sony Vegas Pro page and saw that a better Graphics card could make the diffence. do you agree?
A card like nvidia geforge GTX570 speeds up playback performance by 3.3. see https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuacceleration

    3X faster than what?
Keep in mind these are Marketing talking points. While a better GPU could help, you will still see more bang for the buck with a faster processor. Remember the GPU can only work with data as fast as the processor can send it. Adding a $5,000 top of the line nVidia card to an old Core2 processor would be like teaming a Clydesdale with a mule.

Would it help? Probably. CUDA acceleration is new to Vegas with Version 11 and the user community just doesn’t have enough experience with it to make this kind of blanket prediction.
