  • Exporting from Vegas in Lossless format?

Posted by Rob James on November 14, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Hey Guys, I’m interested in exporting from Vegas 10 in a lossless format, such as HuffyYUV 2.2.1, for importing into Particle Illusions. There is no one answering questions in the Particle Illusions forum, so I’m left with seeking a solution here. I’ve installed HuffyYUV 2.2.1 and I’m able to see it and render out of Particle Illusions with it, but as far as being able to export that format from Vegas, I can’t even see it, let alone use it. I’m hoping that exporting from Vegas in a lossless format is the solution I need for working with HD footage in Particle Illusions? I’m not even sure it is! My goal is obvious, Special FX on HD footage. The problem I’m running into, is every format of HD footage I import into Particle Illusions plays in slow motion. So the resulting exported footage has timing issues with the special effects. In other words the explosion is not keeping up with the object in the original footage. Does anyone have any experience doing this? Basically what I need are precise render settings from Vegas that will allow non-slow motion playback in Particle Illusions. And or a way to export in lossless format from Vegas. Anyone??

If you are using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro it will not show up. Try using Lagarith instead.

I do this all the time but I use a different workflow. I render out of Vegas to CineForm. Then I export just the FX from particleIllusion using QuickTime Animation 32bit with the background video turned off. Finally I place that on a track above the background footage in Vegas. This should work much better than trying to output the video with FX from particleIllusion.

Thank you so much for your answer John, it’s good to find someone who is doing this. My apologies for my late response, but other obligations have kept me from completing this project. Now I have a bit of time to resolve this.
So I’ve taken your advice and installed Lagarith, but again I can’t see it in Vegas 10 as an output option, where should I be looking? (Same thing happened with Huffy.) I am using the 32-bit version of Vegas by the way. I desperately want to try your work flow, but again I can’t see Cineform. I must be missing something very obvious? I do what you do, as far as exporting the effect minus the background, that feature works excellently! But I’ve been exporting the .png sequence. I will try QuickTime Animation 32bit now, though. Out of curiosity why use QuickTime, are you on a Mac? I only ask because I don’t like the QuickTime format, but I can use it, if it improves my work flow. A quick question here, do your HD movies not play in slow motion, inside of Particle Illusions? Because if that’s so, this is definitely the method for me. I’m off to try your work flow, wish me luck.

You need to create a custom template. Select Video for Windows, then the Default Template (uncompressed) and press the Custom… button.

Then on the Video tab of the Custom Settings window you need to look in the Video Format dropdown for the codec you wish to use (Lagarith or HuffYUV) and select it. Then give the template a new name and save it.

No, not obvious at all. CineForm is a 3rd party codec that you would need to purchase. The cheapest version if NeoScene for $99USD. You can just use Lagarith if you’d like.

I use it because there is no equivalent codec in Windows. QuickTime also has a PNG codec that preserves the alpha channel as well. I simply use what works and I don’t pass judgement. 😉

No, they still play in slow motion but since I’m usually keyframing by hand it doesn’t bother me. BTW, nothing plays full speed in particleIllusaion. Even SD DV footage stutters. It’s a special FX engine, not a playback device.

Excellent!! This answers all my questions, thanks John. Now I understand how to make Huffy and Lagarith visible in Vegas. I will look into purchasing NeoScene, thanks! You’re right about passing judgment, it’s not really the format that irks me, it’s the player. Quite trivial and actually irrelevant. Good to know that’s it’s not my box that is causing the slow motion in PI, but the coding itself. They really should look into optimizing it for HD playback, then they would have a super application on their hands. Anyways again, thanks for the help. If you’re curious as to the finished product after your advice, here’s the link to the video.
https://www.robjames.net/LittleSis.wmv (The special effects don’t occur until the final few seconds.) Though being on a Mac it probably won’t even play for you.

It plays fine on my Mac. I use Flip4Mac to view WMV files. 😉

Cool fireworks effect at the end there.
