    Hi,

I’m editing an Investigative Mockumentry and I’m trying to put together the intro for it but I’m having trouble achieving the effect I want.

It’s an effect I’m sure you have seen on openers for shows and such, it’s like there’s a desk of photos and it pans from one over to the next like they all scattered together. But I can’t seem to work out a way to pan from to the next and have it look like they are all together on the same surface, and it looks horrible panning off a photo into black and then quickly onto another. Is there any way of achieving this sort of effect in Sony Vegas? I’m using Sony Vegas 10 by the way.

Obviously I’m not looking to see a desk, just the effect of the photos as if their scattered on a surface and we’re majestically panning from one, and then over to the other and so forth. I’d like them to partially overlap to add the realism of the effect and perhaps a tip on making the movement flow instead of being a mechanical pan crop motion.

Also a side question, if I wanted to put footage into my text, as in have a fire burning inside transparent text, but also have a transparent background so I can put another set of footage BEHIND the burning text, how can I do this without having the footage for the transparent text (the fire) showing through on the transparent background?

Much appreciated, oh great masters of editing *bows*

    Jordan.

Make a really big Photoshop file, say – 36″ X 48″, and use any background you want, like a desktop or corkboard. You can also put other stuff (shopping list, post-it note with a phone number, etc) to give perspective.

In Vegas, use event pan/crop and lots of keyframes to move all over the board.

    Then, share it with us.

Steve, you need to specify a pixel size as 36″ x 48″ is irrelevant to video needs.
Be aware that Vegas does have size limitations for very large images (8,000 x 8,000?).

Jordan, take a look at Scattershot 3D from VASST as it has some interesting options for you to consider.

I forgot to mention that VASST had a Scattershot contest recently.
Check out what some users are doing with it to get more ideas.

Yes, the size in inches means nothing. I could make it 10 PPI or 300 PPI and still be 36X48-inches. Thanks for the correction.

I have done something similar using Photoshop and Vegas, but I am unaware of a size limit in Vegas. Is this documented somewhere?

    Time for an experiment…

Thanks Everyone. I did consider the making a large board with the photos and using pan crop on that but I wasn’t sure if it would work or hold the quality in the zoom, turns out it does work and with the proper keyframes a fine result should emerge. Thanks a lot!
