How to get vegas to automatically update changed stills when they are changed in the underlying directory…
Here’s what I do and why I need it:
I am making a movie with png’s that I make in photoshop.
I have a sound track underneath and on specific points in the timeline I change from one still to the next.
I have now checked the end result and see some stills that need changing, so I go into photoshop, make the change and export the png to the media directory.
Now I would like to know how to get vegas to automatically use the updated still in the timeline, somehow it seems once a still is placed, vegas keeps that picture regardless of a changed source file.
When I change the source png’s vegas does not use the new files but seems to work from memory.
BTW I have more than 300 stills in here and it was a hell of a job to sync them all with the underlying soundtrack, and there is no changing needed in the timeline, only the png’s.
Hope someone knows how to do this!

thanks but that will not work, because photoshop has exported them as undeitable png’s AND my workflow in photoshop allows for all the stills to be numbered in differen layers from 1 to 300.
That way I can keep the picture story on one place and just have to open one psd file, make the specific layer visible that I want to change, change it and export it again to the media directory and then I would just want vegas to take the new source file.

You must use the same name and location, when you save-as a .png
Photoshop is wonderful at changing your file names and your directory causing you to navigate to where you really want it to be saved. So Vegas is looking at the old graphic, not working from memory. If you want to be sure, in the project window, select your graphic and explore current directory. Check the Date-modified to see if it is the last time you saved the file.
The script Mike Kujbida recommends is good if your source is a PSD. Why not use the editable versions?

If it’s only one or a few images that you need to update, you might be able to do it with the “replace media” option.
Find the affected image in the Project Media view, right-click, and choose Replace. Then select the same image file (which you’ve just updated from Photoshop) and Vegas will “replace” it’s cached version with the new version.

Make sure that the Close media files when not the active application option under Options – Preferences is checked/enabled.
If this is enabled, you’ll be able to make your changes in Photoshop, save it in your PNG directory and have it instantly updated in Vegas.
If this option isn’t selected, then you’ll have to manually replace the image in the Vegas Project Media tab so this way is definitely faster.
I just tried this in Pro 8 with a 5 layer PSD file (each one saved as a separate PNG) and it worked just fine. -
There is also a refresh button in Vegas under the Explorer tab. As long as you don’t change file names, the refresh will give you updated content if you have the “Close media option” referenced by Mike turned off. I keep that option turned off because it takes so long to restart your Vegas session if you are using a lot of photos.

Great to have people thinking along and coming up with solutions.
The close media files when not the active application did the trick.
Also the replace did the trick, but then it was all manual.

Oliver, glad to hear that you got it sorted out.
This thread proves once again that the great thing about Vegas is that there’s usually more than one way to do something.
