  • Rendering for actual cinema(2:35) without losing resolution for mashup of videos

    Hi all,

Essentially, I’m trying to create a mashup of trailers and video
clips that can be displayed on a widescreen theatre. My friend recommended that I use 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I’m a complete newbie when it comes to sony vegas or film editing so please bear with me. Note that I have read the 2:35 and Vimeo thread to get an understanding of the various options that I have. But the results I am getting from simple tests have been of poor quality.

My clips have been downloaded from youtube in 1080p format. I set my project settings to 1920×817 (Aspect ratio of 2.35:1). When I import different video clips, they are all displayed slightly different when in the preview. Some have vertical black borders. Some have horizontal black borders. Some have both vertical and horizontal black borders. I read online that you can remove the black borders by unchecking the “match aspect ratio” checkbox in scene properties. I did that for all of my clips to “fill up” the black borders.

When I tried to render, I was given a plethora of options. I just chose “default template” with .mp4 output.

Audio: 128 Kbps, 44,100 Hz, 24 Bit, Stereo, AAC
Video: 29.970 fps, 1920×817 Upper field first, YUV, 768 Kbps
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.457

What came out was pretty awful and would look terrible on a screen theatre.

So basically what do I need to do in order to get a good mashup of these various video clips that will look good on the big screen? Note that this is for a private/personal hobbby and not for commercial purposes.

Ok, I got confused with “maintain aspect ratio” and “match aspect ratio.” I chose “match aspect ratio” and also selected “maintain aspect ratio.” The quality is a lot better. However, I am getting an out memory error saying I should close my applications…but nothing else is open. I have 8 GB of RAM …nothing else is running, and I have a top of the line computer that was built 6 months ago so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue.

“… but that’s not the case because I have X Gb of RAM so that shouldn’t be the problem.”

Low Memory or Out of Memory does not mean “Not enough RAM”, though adding RAM can sometimes fix a “Low Memory” waning. A “Low Memory” warning usually means that you have exceeded your commit limit. You need either a bigger page file, more physical memory, or both.

Thanks Stephan. I actually fixed the problem by trying various fixes listed in a youtube video. It turns on this is a very common Sony Vegas bug that people have experienced.

No, it’s not a Vegas bug – it is that Vegas uses more of your PC resources than most other programs. So if your PC is marginal (and the default settings are usually marginal), then Vegas will likely push it over the edge.
