  • mp3 import into AE cs4 – preview plays back as a drone??

Posted by Jamie Schmid on May 14, 2009 at 4:53 am

I am new to AfterEffects. I tried importing a mp3 (dragged it from finder to the project panel) then from projects, dragged to comp 1. the waveform visuals look like one thick line (no levels)
i set the resolution at 1/3 and hit ram preview. when it plays along the timeline it just sounds like a drone – not the sound at all.
    Can somebody help me please?
    Thank you!!
Ps I am on a Mac OSX Leopard.

Oh, sorry. I see in the title that it is CS4.
Go figure… the convert to AIFF/WAV tip still applies as a workaround.

What AE version are you using, Jamie? From CS3 and moving forward (including CS4, of course), After Effects does support the use of MP3 audio files (it converts them to uncompressed audio on import).
In pre-CS3 versions, the recommended route was converting compressed audio (like MP3) to uncompressed, linear PCM formats (ie, WAV or AIFF). You could still do this with any simple audio utility (even iTunes or Quicktime Pro), just convert the file and then import it into AE.

I ended up deleting that import, and importing it again – this time it works! i have no idea what happened, but thanks for your help 🙂
