I currently capture gaming footage at 1080i and convert to WMV at 480×854 but it takes 2 and a half to 3 hours to render a 12 minute clip on my quad core i7 using 64bit windows 7, it seems slow to me i have added the setting i use as a picture, so any advice to speed things up but keeping a good quality of vid, or any advice generally to get a quicker render or better result would be appreciated

(I decided to use WMV after rendering off one clip using different codecs, making sure the rendered file size came out the same for each, then uploading to youtube and comparing the difference, although some of the others seemed better before upload to youtube the WMV seemed to get converted better by the youtube engine giving a better final result, to my eyes anyway)

I’d not bother with the trip to .wmv. I’d assume what ever format you are recording in would be less taxing then trying to edit .wmv.

You have a decent computer so power through.

If you need to convert people seem to be happy with Avids free DNxHD, Cineform, or MXF.

If you are going to youtube stick with 1280 x 720 Minimum. HD is king on Youtube without it you will loose views.

Well I’ve done quite a bit of experimenting tonight and have fallen in love with x264 lol It took me over 20 mins to render a 24 second clip using WMV but using x264 it takes 2 mins, look way better and is much smaller, so it’s win win win, sadly this means goodbye to sony vegas, well except when im making montages 😀

Just for future reference for anybody using a HD-PVR, here is what i finally came up with, I do the colour tweaking using the settings button while recording in TME and record at 1080i, i then use Smart Cutter to losslessly trim the .TS file, I then use StaxRip + x264 with settings 2 pass animation medium, the results are great im currently getting 720p files at the same size and quality as i was getting from 480p WMV files, so there you have it, that is now my preferred method
