    Hi there,

I’ve recently got a new laptop with no firewire port and am having trouble getting footage from a DV tapes (shot on a Z1) into Vegas for editing.

In lieu of being able to import the tapes directly into Vegas, I captured the footage on a friend’s AVID hoping I could simply plug the hard disk into my laptop and use the clips, which are in MXF format (which supposedly Vegas Pro can handle).

Each clip is comprised of 3 files (presumably 1 video & 2 audio) but when I try and import them into Vegas it simply says “Warning: An error occurred while opening one or more files”.

Am I missing a codec or should Vegas be able to natively import these files?

    thanks!

I can confirm that Vegas 9 and Vegas 10 pro have no problems importing MXF files. I would suggest that Avid is the problem here. Unfortunately I am not familiar with Avid, so I cannot suggest where he may be going wrong.

If your laptop has an expresscard, you can get a firewire express card for it.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 10e (x32/x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

I guess it’s Avid not playing nice then…?

Frustratingly my brand new laptop (Dell XPS 15) doesn’t have an expresscard either… Not ideal.

I may have to try and get Avid myself…

I don’t think Avid will solve your problems. Judging by some of the issues/questions being raised on this Avid forum, I would suggest that the MC Adrenaline/capture tool makes an absolute mess of what should be pretty straightforward.

Perhaps you need to search the Creative Cow Avid forum or submit your question there.

As an aside, Vegas HDV capture typically gives you an m2t file. I have been given HDV MXF files off a Sony EX1 camera, but that was via the XDCAM Explorer tool.

I downloaded a 30-day trial of Avid MC5 and the MXF files open in that so it looks like I’ll be using it to edit this project….

    *spends the day learning Avid….*
