  • Monitor Profiles – Spyder 3

    Hi all,

A few questions regarding color flow.

I’ve calibrated my second vga lcd monitor using my Spyder 3 Elite which I use in Vegas to view video on.

Question 1 – Do I load that ICC that the Spyder 3 has created into Vegas under the Preview Device preferences or has the windows system automatically loaded this profile thus making it system wide.

I know that the system does load up the Spyder profile at start up but I was wondering if Vegas bypassed it.

Question 2 – Along these lines should I be using the PAL/SECAM icc since I’m creating material for PAL DVD ?

Question 3 – With regards to creating DVD material should I also be using the Computer to Studio Color Corrector to sit my material within the safe parameters. Note that I render out of Vegas to the final mpeg 2 files.

    Thanks for reading !

[Steve Roberts] “Question 1 – Do I load that ICC that the Spyder 3 has created into Vegas under the Preview Device preferences or has the windows system automatically loaded this profile thus making it system wide.”

Yes, load the Spyder3 profile into the Vegas Secondary Display so that Vegas uses it.

[Steve Roberts] “Question 2 – Along these lines should I be using the PAL/SECAM icc since I’m creating material for PAL DVD ?”

No, use the one you created with the Spyder3. It will give you the most accurate color representation for your computer display.

[Steve Roberts] “Question 3 – With regards to creating DVD material should I also be using the Computer to Studio Color Corrector to sit my material within the safe parameters. Note that I render out of Vegas to the final mpeg 2 files.”

No, the footage you shot is already Studio RGB and the MPEG2 codec is also expecting Studio RGB so you already have everything set by doing nothing. You would only use the Computer RGB to Studio RGB filter on still images which are a computer RGB source.

If you are worried about keeping broadcast safe levels, you should add the Broadcast Colors filter to your master video bus with the Lenient – 7.5 Setup preset applied. This will only clip the output however. You still need to monitor your levels with a Waveform monitor for luma values and Vectorscope for chroma values and keep them within limits. Otherwise the clipping may look very harsh.

Thanks for the great info John.

But, an interesting point with regards to the studio rgb conversion. I should have mentioned that my footage is actually sequenced stills (timelapse) from various digital cameras. Does it still apply that I DONT need to do the computer to studio rgb conversion.

No, you need it. As I said in my previous post, “You would only use the Computer RGB to Studio RGB filter on still images which are a computer RGB source.” which means you SHOULD apply Computer RGB to Studio RGB to the image sequence because it was shot in computer RGB.

Don’t be sorry. Sometimes things aren’t as clear as we would like them to be. I’m always willing to explain again if it helps clarify one’s understanding. 🙂

How does one load a profile into the secondary display? I have a 1 monitor system and cannot find the menu to do this? What am I missing?
I do remember doing this in VP9, and now cannot.

    System:Win7 VP11

    Thank you,

    Malcolm
