I see lots of help out there on how to import VOB files/DVD footage into Vegas (I use Vegas 10).

However, this always imports the whole DVD, and this is a lot of time and disk space wasted.

Is there are way of importing only a section of video from a DVD? For example, import from 23min to 34min (so a specified 11 minute segment, or chapter)?

And, if the answer is “no, you have to import the lot”, is there a way I can dispose of the unwanted footage without affecting quality?

Specifically, once I have imported the footage, I have an MPG file. A bit like photocopying a photocopy, you lose quality each time, and so too with rendering/converting video files (I gather). If I open the MPG in Vegas as its own project, cut off the top and tail to leave just my desired 11 minute segment, and then save it again as an MPG, will that second MPG have lost quality compared to the original?

    Thanks…

You’re worrying about a few Gb of disk space when terabyte drives are around $60 today?

If you *must* trim, then you can render a region to a new AVI file then edit that file.

You could just hook a digital camcorder to the audio/video out of a DVD player and capture the segment you want through the firewire out of the camera. That way you have an AVI to work with that is only the length you want.

You can just copy the one VOB file that has the section you want. Use Windows Explorer. Then change the extention from vob to mpg.

Get Womble MPEG VCR. It will allow you to open a VOB file, mark the IN and OUT point and click Save and it will copy the contents to a new MPG file with no re-rendering. You will have your original quality intact in the new file.
