  • Could someone assist me in sorting out the difference between ALL the different options in Render As?

I’m soooooo confused! Could someone help me sort out in my mind the difference between all the different settings within the Render As dialog?!

Why would I choose MainConcept AVC/AAC over Quicktime 7? Or why would I choose Sony AVC/MVC over Video for Windows (*.avi) or something else over Windows Media Video (*.wmv)? So many options?

Or what about ALL the options just within the Sony AVC/MVC selection?

This is probably something someone could write an entire white paper on!

But I was just wondering which is the best to choose.

Or, is there some place online where I can read about this?

    Thank you.

    Ron

It really comes down to what your going to play the videos on. For example, WMV and MP4 are good for internet streaming. I’m sure you can Google it and find plenty of articles on them. Here’s one I found with one search.

As Danny writes, it depends on where you want to play your videos (computer, DVD/Blu ray player, send it for broadcast, etc….) and what is your source.
Give us more information to get a more accurate answer.

    Thank you.

    That article was helpful.

Right now, I’m going to say that most–if not all–of my videos will be played online.

Also, aren’t DVDs going the way of the video cassette, 8-track tape, cassette tape, etc? So much is being streamed now, I would think that DVDs will eventually die out. Is that true?

So, let’s stick for now with online playing. What is the difference between all the different formats and why one would want to choose a particular format to render as over another format.

    Thank you.

Ron, With so many SD camcorders out there that people make home DVDs, I don’t see them going away anytime soon.
As far as a format for the web, Vegas 10 has several MP4 render presets labeled for Internet to pick from. Select one with the same sesolution as your source footage.

    Thanks.

In the meantime, I found a great article here:

    https://gizmodo.com/5093670/giz-explains-every-video-format-you-need-to-know

I learned a lot from it and it helped a lot!

But then, I have another question:

In the Sony Render As dialog, what is the difference between MainConcept AVC/AAC, Sony AVC/MVC, and XDCAM EX? All those seem to be in .mp4 formats.

Thanks again for all your help.
